how to extend the life of a blowout

Nothing beats the bounce, body, style and sheen of a professional blowout. Try as we might, replicating one at home always turns out to be a disappointing (and time-intensive) endeavor. And while we’d like to make bi-weekly blowouts part of our usual routine, our schedules (and bank accounts) have different ideas. Luckily, we’ve picked up some tricks to ward off limp locks, greasy roots, and frizzy tangles–making our occasional professional blowouts go the distance. Saving a blowout beyond day three does require a bit of strategy. Let us breakdown our tactics.

Sleep

At night pull hair back into a loose ballerina on top of your head. Secure it with a soft scrunchie to avoid dents or damaging the ends. If you tossed your scrunchies with the turn of century, a few extra loops with a headband will do. If you toss and turn or sleep on your side, try wearing a silk headband to smooth the hairline while you snooze. While you’re at it, it’s time to swap in those silk pillowcases too.

Shower

When it comes time to shower, a thick shower cap is a must. Look for a sturdy elastic rim that will stay in place, locking out moisture. Try to avoid shower caps of the cheap plastic variety, which can cause your head to sweat, creating frizz. If you’re serious about extending your style, a laminated fabric one is the way to go. We love the style-saving caps from Dry Divas. For locks that are feeling particularly limp, wrap a few large sections of hair at the top of your head in Velcro curlers, before you hop in the shower. Afterwards, remove your cap and curlers for an instant lift.

Style

In a perfect world a little fluffing with your fingers would be all that you need to revive a blowout. In the real world a blast of dry shampoo to soak up oil and perk up roots is always on the agenda. We swear by Redken Powder Refresh 01, but some favorites include: Bumble and bumble Hair Powder and L’Oréal EverStyle Texture Series Energizing Dry Shampoo. Make sure you’re using the proper dry shampoo technique too! If you’re fighting frizz, use a flat iron go over just the areas that need attention in small sections. Finish with a shine serum, like Garnier Fructis Style Brilliantine Shine Glossing Spray or Living Proof Satin Hair Serum, on the ends. For beauties with bangs, a blow dryer and round brush may be needed to restyle your fringe.

Stay Away

We’ll leave you with this last quick tip: Hand’s off! Try not to touch your hair throughout the day as oils on your fingers can weigh down your hair, putting you on the fast track to a limp blowout.
