The Bride Diaries: Kim’s Quirky Kitsch & Colourful Wedding Part 2

The Bride Diaries: Kim’s Quirky Kitsch & Colourful Wedding Part 2

Hey there WWWers, are you ready for Rory and Kim’s wedding reception at Dove Barn in Suffolk?

Rory and Kim got super crafty making all of their quirky colourful wedding decor. There was crochet, pom poms, terrariums, garlands, pin wheels and stationery designed by Kim. I so love the personalised pencils, colour theme table centrepieces and abundance of sweet bird decorations. Every single little detail was thoughtfully added.

How happy and loved up do these two look? Wow.

Thanks so much again to Georgi Mabee for sharing her gorgeous images with us today.

The Venue… The Church – St Mary’s in Cavendish is where 3 generations of my family got married. We are the 4th generation to get married, and it was such an easy decision; the church and its surroundings are beautiful.

The reception – Dove Barn, Groton, Sudbury – A beautiful barn in the middle of nowhere on the Suffolk/Essex border. The barn has two main rooms, a courtyard and garden. We were allowed access to the private gardens of the Tudor house for our couple portrait.

The Cake… Mum made the cake, and it really was delicious! We had extravagant plans for decorations involving brightly coloured sugar paste, but the weather was so hot, it melted as soon as we unwrapped it, so we decided simple was best, and I made a last minute cake topper after deciding the bride and groom that we had bought didn’t really sit right.

We had chocolate, lemon and vanilla cakes in the 3 tiers.

The Details + Decor… The details were what I was all about! I designed all of the wedding stationery, and so made sure the place cards were in keeping with the design. The tables didn’t have numbers- they were all colour coded with favour bags, place cards, flowers and doilies all coordinating. I bought the doilies from Ebay, charity shops and car boot sales, and spent a few days dyeing them to match the colours of the bags I had bought from Etsy.

The button holes were put together weeks in advance at my kitchen table. I found a fantastic Etsy shop where I sourced the pieces; I made a couple of trial attempts until I was happy with the design, and made button holes for the wedding party and close friends. They were finished with washi tape to tie all of the colours together.

Décor was very important to me. We filled the barn with paper decorations – balls and pom poms in the dance barn for the evening and reception drinks, and bright paper fans in the smaller barn where we ate and had the speeches.  The decorations were collected in the Christmas sales, online from a number of websites, and made by us. I also made paper garlands using super sparkly card and a sewing machine. A massive thank you to all the friends and family who helped to put it all together!

The favour bags were filled with little goodies – customised Rory (heart) Kim pencils with the date, sachets of tea and coffee, sweets, toys and glow sticks.

We also hung banners with various Johnny Cash lyrics in both barns. They are now hanging up in our house!

Your Photographer… Georgi was AMAZING. She truly is fantastic at what she does. We had an engagement shoot a year before the wedding, and I knew then that we were onto a winner. We clicked instantly, and had similar ideas for how to create the wedding photos that were in our heads. We put the emphasis on fun, colourful photos and capturing the little moments, which Georgi certainly delivered.

I found Georgi on the WWW blog and haven’t looked back. We said that photography was something that we were going to set aside a decent budget for, and we actually ended up with a second shooter, Olivia, who was just fabulous, and we’re now getting an album made. It’s great to look back at such a range of photos; from the big moments to the little details. It brings it all flooding back.

The Honeymoon… We booked a last minute trip to New York. We went for 6 days, and it was fantastic – definitely the best option for us. We ate, saw the sights, shopped and geeked out in museums.  Then we went to V Festival a few days later; not as glam, but we had so much fun!

Memorable Moments… Rory – The moment I woke up and realised it was finally the day, watching Kim walk down the aisle and getting through my speech without crying!

Kim- Putting on my veil- it suddenly hit me at that moment, and I was nervous for 5 minutes, then it passed! When walking down the aisle on our way out, we spontaneously bowed and curtseyed, then ran out of the church, everyone joining us for our first dance (to Johnny Cash, who else?).

Advice for Other Couples… Plan the day you want. Lots of people say the small details don’t matter, but to me, they made the day what it was.

Spend as much as you can afford on a good photographer, and get to know them, it really is worth it.

Enjoy the day, and take a couple of minutes to yourself. It all goes far too quickly.
