How to: Keep Skin Healthy This Winter

winter skin care tips

The temperature is dropping and winter is coming. Among your to do list items (ice skating, embracing oversized sweaters, splurging on hot chocolate “for warmth”) there’s one thing Team MDC wants to help with—taking care of the dry skin that can feel unavoidable.

We spoke with Dr. Heidi A Waldorf, the Director of Laser & Cosmetic Dermatology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. First, we asked her for a few simple tips to focus on the face. Here’s what she told us:

1. Keep it simple — moisturize. “My patients with dry skin frequently tell me 'I know I should drink more water', but they aren't moisturizing,” Dr. Waldorf told us. “While keeping hydrated internally is important for your general health and therefore your skin, the most direct way to improve dry skin is by applying a good moisturizer daily.”

Have oily skin? Dr. Waldorf said that you need to moisturize too! There are lighter lotions and serums appropriate for oily skin without making it feel slick or greasy or causing acne flares. She said to look for serums with hyaluronic acid or glycerin.

2. Avoid over-washing with harsh soaps. Strong detergent soaps strip important proteins and lipids, the foundation of a healthy skin barrier. “Your skin should feel soft and supple after washing, not tight,” she said.

3. Detox the skin! Continue to apply topical antioxidants to quench free radicals. Dr. Waldorf recommends Caudalie Vinexpert Firming Serum to be used alone or as part of an anti-aging regimen even for the driest skin.

The face isn’t the only victim of wintery, dry skin—you can’t forget about the hands, elbows, knees, and feet. Dr. Waldorf told us that these areas have a thicker skin barrier and require thicker moisturizers. Hands are exposed to the elements constantly and get the brunt of dryness from washing.

MDC Tip: Apply a thick coat of lotion on your hands and put socks over them like mittens before going to sleep (preferably on a “you” night). In the morning you’ll be shocked by how hydrated and smooth your hands are!

MDC recommends: Kiehl’s Crème de Corps (hello limited edition “Grapefruit” Whipped body butter for holiday!), The Body Shop Cocoa Butter Hand and Body Lotion, bliss high intensity hand cream.
