Color Crush: 4 Reasons We’re Loving Burgundy This Winter

Color Crush: 4 Reasons We’re Loving Burgundy This Winter

via

Though a bright, bold red usually holds the honor of being the most festive color of the holiday season, this winter, we’re crushing hard on its smoldering older sister – burgundy. This understated red-brown shade is a wearable, chic alternative to the overabundance of candy-apple crimsons that tend to crop up in excess during the chilliest season of the year. Paired with a soft smoky eye, snuggly sweater and loose, undone waves, burgundy is the only color you need to turn a head (or two) at your next holiday party.

Below are four reasons why we’re seriously into this classy shade:

1. Burgundy nails will perfectly match the Merlot in your wine glass

Is there anything more glamorous than gliding through a holiday party in a slinky dress with a half-filled wineglass raised oh-so-casually in one hand? We think not. Burgundy nails will look amazing as you raise a glass of (unspilled) red wine to your lips and give a coquettish glance to the mysterious, charming stranger across the room.

2. Burgundy lips are universally flattering (no really, they are)

Think burgundy lips will only work for ladies with Rooney Mara’s pale complexion and raven locks? Think again. For lighter skin tones, look for burgundy lipsticks with red or brown undertones; for olive or dark skin tones, try a purple-based burgundy. If you’ve never rocked this moody hue before, dip your toe in the pool with a stain instead of a super-pigmented lipstick. Oh, and just for kicks? We dare you to go matte.

3. Burgundy is a nicer word than “Oxblood”

We’re just going to come out and say it – we’re kind of disturbed by the word “oxblood”. As the trendiest hue of Fall 2012 runways and beyond, it stole hearts and emptied wallets as women everywhere scrambled to get their hands on oxblood coats, skirts, tops, polishes and more. Though we may have swooned along with the rest of them, frankly, we prefer burgundy because – unlike oxblood – it’s a classic word that reminds us more of crisp, velvet Victorian dresses than well, spilled animal blood. Sure, there may be a very slight difference between the two, but when in doubt, we’ll always choose our favorite b-word – something tells us it might just stay more timeless…

4. Burgundy undertones can give new life to your locks

If your hair is looking a bit dull this season, consider asking your stylist to add burgundy undertones to your locks on your next trip to the salon. Dark, ashy hair colors can actually cause your skin to look duller, so a burgundy-based gloss will give you a warm, pretty glow during the winter months. Extend the life of your color by using shine-boosting glazes at home in between visits. Have commitment issues? Try an at-home, non-permanent gloss instead for an instant color pick-me-up. Now go practice your hair toss in front of the mirror…
