The Colour Clash Issue: The Details

Morning lovelies! Are you enjoying this month's Style Guide? It's a bit of a contrast to our Autumn/Winter series, but with Spring just around the corner (ok, maybe two corners!) we wanted to shake you out of that winter hibernation mode with a punch of colour. Last week I talked about the décor for this look, all paper streamers and ribbons with lots of contrasting colours. Our palette hinges around Pantone's Colour of the Year for 2014 - Radiant Orchid - but rather stick to the popular tonal schemes I added fuschia and coral to liven things up! This week we're looking at the details in more depth - the things that bring your whole look together. From the stationery to the cake (or in this case, macaron tower!) we considered the colour palette, textures and current trends to create a cohesive look.

Our b.team stationery whizz Catharine from Itty Bitty & Bijou designed a colourful suite that picked up on the colourful ribbon details ~

I especially love the use of ribbons in this look so I chose to pick up on this detail in the stationery designs. This look was achieved by using a simple, clean sans serif font paired with a more decorative typeface for the Menu, and then the elegant decorative typeface for the Bride and Groom's place cards and food labels. Then the ribbons! I chose three different colours, widths and textures as it gave a really great effect. I simply used a sewing machine to attach the ribbons and trimmed the edges. This is something you can definitely try yourself for your own Wedding Stationery or even your Bridal Shower! Recreate the look yourself using our free printable template - just add ribbons!

To compliment the table arrangements, our florist Liz from Blue Sky Flowers created a wild & loose hand tied bouquet combining the same flowers and colours - Peach Amaryllis and coral Tulips, creamy Tuscany and hot pink Poison Roses, delicate tendrils of purple Clematis, white Genista and Majolika spray Roses with a final flourish of cerise pink Peony and fragrant Eucalyptus foliage, finished with a shot silk vibrant blue ribbon. You could pick smaller versions of the same bouquets for your bridesmaids, or pick single-bloom bouquets using the coral tulips for a real colour clash against vibrant dresses!

Our cloche-covered macaron place settings were just a taste of the magic... Reshmi, chief macaron maker at Anges de Sucre designed four different macaron towers using floral accents to highlight the colours within the tower. The largest tower had ten alternating tiers arranged with coral, bright pink and radiant orchid macarons with a full base of flowers, and the other three towers were arranged in block colours and a simple single bloom topper as a finishing touch.

In my own humble opinion (I may be mildly biased here), macarons, when made right, are some of the most aesthetically pleasing patisseries around and the ultimate vessels of flavour and versatility. We see a lot of pastels or muted tones in rustic, vintage and shabby chic to Marie-Antoinette-Versailles styled weddings so I jumped at the chance to embrace these bright tones and hot new colours! The colours - Coral, Hot Pink and Radiant Orchid - were vibrant and bright but not luminous, which is the optimal balance to make macarons visually interesting yet appetising, and made an unusual eye-catching ensemble. There's a popular saying, 'We eat with our eyes first, nose second, and tongue last'. I like to apply this approach and make macarons to be true representatives of their flavour profiles, using natural ingredients such a fresh fruit and real vanilla bean pods to impart genuine tastes and aromas, and use the colours to convey those particular ingredients and flavours. So I paired fresh raspberries with white chocolate for Hot Pink, mangoes and juicy nectarines for Coral, and plump sweet blackberries with a touch of mint for Radiant Orchid, which turned out to be so popular that we have now included it in our Signature Collection of flavours!
