Your 4 Worst Winter Skin Woes, Solved!

Your 4 Worst Winter Skin Woes, Solved!

via

Let's be honest - many of us think that summer is when we should protect our skin the most and then slack off during winter months because the sun's rays aren't as prevalent. Little do we realize that winter weather causes nothing but drama for our skin, from the dry winds in the air to the central heat in our homes. Not to worry, my beauties! Here are tips for curing four of your most common winter skin woes.

Woe #1: Snake skin

The skin on your face is dry and cracked and starting to resemble those legless slithering creatures we all (well, most of us) fear. While exfoliating is important, make sure that you limit it to once a week to avoid stripping the skin of its natural oils. Also, look for natural ingredients like honey that will help maintain your skin's natural moisture. After exfoliating, use a hydrating spray and seal it in with an emollient moisturizer.

Woe #2: Chapped lips

Worst. Feeling. Ever. End of story. Who would have thought that a small area of dry skin could make you so miserable? Since the skin on your lips do not contain oil glands, they tend to dry out very quickly - especially in dry winter months. Make sure you keep your lips hydrated at all times with a lip balm that contains Shea butter and plant oils. A tip for smooth lips during winter? Use a toothbrush with soft bristles and gently go back and forth to exfoliate any dead skin before applying. And whatever you do, do NOT lick your lips - this will cause them to dry out even more!

Woe #3: Sun damage

We tend to think that because the sun isn't as visible during winter months, we're in the clear. WRONG! In fact, the effects of the sun during winter months are the most detrimental because we skip out on the sunscreen all together, thus making our naked skin vulnerable and susceptible to wrinkles, skin cancer and other problems. It's extremely important that you always apply a sunscreen with at least an SPF 30, even if it's overcast. And it never hurts to double up on the protection by using a foundation with SPF built in it.

Woe #4: Dry hands

I am a firm believer that you can guess a woman's age by the condition of the skin on her face, neck...and hands. Let's face it (no pun intended), we take care of the skin on our face to slow the aging process. The one body part we tend to neglect is our hands. Similar to the skin on our lips, the skin on our hands is extremely thin and has a tendency to become severely dry. During winter months, make sure you give some extra TLC to your phalanges by moisturizing them every time you wash them. For extra hydration, put gloves on at night immediately after applying a hand cream that contains Shea butter. You'll wake up with silky smooth hands! Yes, the winter months are drawing to a close but it's never too late to start incorporating these tips into your skincare routine. The good news is that if you are aware of the factors that cause damage to your skin, you can be one step ahead and take the necessary precautions to avoid it!
