In Rachel Zoe's new book, Living In Style: Inspiration and Advice for Everyday Glamour, the celebrity stylist dispenses personal style navigation know-how and her thoughts behind picking the perfect throw pillow every time. And then she also writes about one of our favorite occasions in life: weddings! Here, an exclusive excerpt from her coffee-table tome, out today:

How to find the perfect gown? Before anything else, go through tons of magazines and books to look at as many gowns as you can. I also advise you to begin pulling clips from magazines about six months before you even start shopping. A bridal salon can be incredibly overwhelming if you don't have a general sense of what you want to wear. But, at the same time, be open to anything. Yes, in essence, you are preparing to ultimately change your mind. It sounds crazy, but I have found that most women wear the opposite of what they assumed would feel right on them. When it comes to accessories, I have three words for you: Wear a veil. My philosophy is that you have one day in your life to do it, so take advantage of that opportunity. It's romantic and timeless and makes the walk down the aisle a true Cinderella moment. If you're worried about comfort, you can always take it off right after the ceremony. Wear a pair of shoes that are comfortable, too, so that you can dance all night. Stash wedges or lower heels under the table if you think you'll need to make a quick switch. As for jewelry, choose classic styles over dramatic pieces. It's tempting to wear an over-the-top necklace or chandelier earrings, but you don't want your gems to compete with your wedding dress. Even a simple slip dress shouldn't be upstaged by big jewelry. I typically recommend that brides select accessories close to their everyday style. If you always wear gold hoops, try on a pair with pavé diamonds. I opted for classic diamond solitaire studs. With bridal beauty, again, be true to your style. If you don't typically wear a lot of makeup, do a natural, glamorous look for your wedding-just amp it up a little bit. Remember: You want to feel comfortable and look like yourself. You may be seduced by trends, but on this occasion, I always recommend that you veer more toward traditional. Believe me, I have seen brides make outlandish decisions just because they saw it on a runway or in a bridal magazine. You just might regret the purple leather opera gloves or that mini top hat. If you feel the need to distinguish yourself with a unique accent, opt for a subtle highlight like a colored sash or shoes. When it's right, you'll know it.
