5 DIY Hair Treatments You Can Cook Up Tonight


Have you felt like you just can't get your hair clean enough? You haven't quite been able to achieve that "squeaky clean" feeling? Recently I've noticed that many of my clients have been coming into the salon with buildup on their hair. Buildup can occur due to many different circumstances: when you're not cleansing your hair thoroughly, when you are applying too much product to your hair, and if your hair has been in an environment where the water is chlorine-treated or minerals are present. The result of this buildup is lackluster, limp hair. Your hair and scalp can be affected, but fortunately it's easy to fix. There are tons of clarifying treatments out there, but if you don't want to make a trip to the beauty aisle, all you need to do is head to your kitchen.

1. Baking Soda. One of the most commonly used rinses is a baking soda rinse. Not only is baking soda an oil absorbent, but it also has a somewhat abrasive texture that is great for scrubbing. Mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda in the palm of your hand with an equal amount of shampoo and blend together to make a paste. Shampoo as normal, and rinse thoroughly. Baking soda is an amazing way to get your hair nice and clean, but it is gentle enough that it won't dry out your hair. It's also a great way to remove any green color from chlorine.

2. Apple Cider Vinegar. You can create an amazing hair rinse for you hair with apple cider vinegar. Not only will it cleanse your hair, but it will also condition and strengthen it. I like to add 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to 1 cup of water in a spray bottle. After shampooing, generously spray your hair with the mixture and comb through. Then, let it sit for 5-10 minutes and rinse thoroughly. Condition as normal. While your hair is wet, there will be a faint odor of vinegar. However, as you blow dry the odor will fade and eventually disappear altogether. This will leave your hair sparkling clean and silky.

3. Salt. Salt is a super cleanser. Most shampoos contain salt in some form. Salt penetrates deep beneath the cuticle of the hair and pulls out any molecules inside, be it dirt, color or oil. While many shampoos do contain a small amount, sometimes it still isn't enough to remove excess buildup in your hair. Mixing a tablespoon of ordinary table salt in with your normal shampoo will give it the extra boost it needs to leave your hair build-up free. These residues can suffocate your hair and prevent it from absorbing any moisture. I recommend using this solution no more than once a month, followed by your favorite conditioner to avoid any dryness or fading. A great alternative to this trick is to use Redken Cleansing Cream , which will also remove any excess oils or buildup from your scalp and hair.

4. Eggs. Adding a beaten egg to your handful of shampoo is an easy way to gently clean your hair as well as condition and strengthen it. Not only are eggs packed with vitamins that will revitalize your hair, but also the fatty acids it contains will remove any excess product buildup while this protein-packed solution strengthens and adds luster and shine to your hair.

5. Lemongrass. Lemongrass is a great way to cleanse your hair as well as condition it all in one shot. Bring 1 cup of water to a boil and add 2 tablespoons of lemongrass, and let it steep for 15 minutes. Strain the herbs and let the "tea" cool. After shampooing your hair, rinse with the warm tea. This will gently remove any buildup while hydrating and protecting your hair from heat. It's also very fragrant and will keep your hair smelling fresh.

Make sure your hair isn't subjected to the "suffocation" that buildup can cause and you'll have a whole head of beautiful healthy hair.
