Name Change Tips for Destination Weddings and Honeymoons

Name Change Tips for Destination Weddings and Honeymoons

Whether you're tying the knot in an exotic locale or spending your first few days as newlyweds abroad, name change plays an important part in your plans. Below are 4 tips to ensure a smooth trip:

  1. Book your flights and reservations in your maiden name. Your last name doesn't instantly change after you say "I do", so your travel plans need to match your current forms of ID.
  2. Insure to ensure smooth travel. Consider purchasing travel insurance for your wedding/honeymoon. This will help you avoid any fees if your fiancé flubs your name and you need to make changes to your tickets.
  3. Request copious copies of your marriage certificate. Asking for two or three copies of your certificate will save you many headaches and international phone calls when you file for your name change at home.
  4. Be informed. A quick call to the Social Security Administration at 800.772.1213 will verify that your marriage certificate will be accepted by their office, or if you need to have it authenticated/translated before filing for your name change.
