Blended Beauty: How to Combine Colors for a New Look

Limited options doesn't mean limited looks. In fact, the way we see it, an edited makeup selection is an invitation to get creative. There's a reason they call it makeup artistry. Just do as professional makeup artist Elyse Reneau does and consider the back of your hand your artist palette. The trick to mixing makeup like a pro is to use the same formulas. For the best cosmetic concoctions, blend creams with creams, powders with powders and so on. To show you how, we created three looks - one with soft, muted shades, one with bolder and brighter colors, and one that combined all of the products for a beautiful new effect.

Soft

We started off with the basics. Reneau used shade #1 from the , concentrating the light taupe color in the crease of the eyelids. On the cheeks, she used her finger to blend onto the apples of the cheeks. For the lips, Reneau chose a warm peach shade, .

Bold

The second look we created packed a little more punch. Reneau defined the eyes with the darker shade from the . This time the cheeks got a pop of pink with on the cheekbones. And the lips got , a cool bright pink.

Blended

Blended together, the soft shades from the first look and the bolder colors used in the second look create an entirely new palette to work with. Reneau loaded her eye shadow brush with both the light taupe and dark brown eye shadow. And used the new color to emphasize the contour of the eyelids. She layered the pale lilac and poppy pink cream blushes to create a cooler pink cheek color. On the lips, Reneau started with the bright pink lipstick and then blended the coral onto just the center of lips for a soft pink pout.
