Black is back!

Written by: louise

It's no secret I'm a huge fan of South African wedding design; the creativity and resourcefulness of brides & wedding professionals alike never fails to impress me. They are continually ahead of the curve - new trends always appear here a season before they hit the UK - and this shoot from the incredibly talented Catherine Mac is no exception. Wanting to explore a colour often unused in wedding palettes, this creative team set out to show us why black is BACK!

Every girl has felt the power of the perfect little black dress, it's subtle yet sexy, striking yet demure. No matter what the event, you know you're going to feel great, and surely that's just what you want to achieve on your wedding day? The vision of creative Cape Town florist Heike le Cordeur of Fleur le Cordeur, teamed deep, rich black with pastel shades of blush and gold - classic 'pretty' colours, showing you how to use black in a non-gothic, non-scary but totally alluring way. I'm smitten!

Stunning liquid-like satin, silk and sequinned dresses from bridal designer Kobus Dipenaar (one of my superhero's) are quite simply stunning. The combination of black and gold provide an air of mysterious sophistication. The exquisite details soften every look, a perfectly placed bow, the hint of bare skin through black lace and a gently swooping train add feminine allure. Elegant, graceful hair styles & makeup with a hint of vampish-ness just add to the overall effect.

Heike's floral arrangements are designed to impress, and they need to be to stand up to the deep black tones! The combination of strong, architectural proteas and seed pods work beautifully with the softer, romantic use of roses and tulips. I am completely in love with the use of florals as accessories too - how incredible is that floral wrap? And the stunning back adornment? And the wide brimmed hat with floral decoration - oh so perfect for a chic British celebration!

"We want brides to look at black in a different way, the hue doesn't have to look gloomy and Gothic; a black dress can inspire the emergence of a warm, elegant wedding theme." says Heike.

The details certainly do not disappoint either - a black cake? It might sound a step too far but Edible Art totally make it work, luxurious textures and gold touches take to a whole new level of wow-ness! It looks sumptuous, rich and totally delicious!

Are you in love with black? We'd love to hear your thoughts!
