What Kind of Layers Are Right for Your Hair Type and Face Shape?

Most women walk into a salon and tell their stylist to give their locks a trim, keep the layers long and the length in tact. There's no denying this is the safe way to go about getting a haircut. And while this prevents you from getting a bad haircut, it also prevents you from getting a good one. No two people are the same and no two haircuts should be the same. Haircuts and layers should always complement your face shape. Take a look at our tips for the best cuts for your mug's shape!

Oval

An oval-shaped face is more narrow than long. When picking the perfect layers, avoid a cut that will make your face appear too long and droopy. Opt for longer, face-framing layers over shorter layers. The no-layer look is also a no-go as this can put you in long-face territory too! Try a long 'do with layers starting just under the chin to show off that face shape and give it a more chiseled look.

Square

How do you know you have a square face? If your forehead and jawline run parallel to each other, you're a candidate. The wrong kind of layers can make your face seem broad, and you don't want that! Be easy on the layering, keeping them light and not overly defined to create the illusion of a softer jawline. An ideal look for you square-faced ladies is the über-trendy long bob paired up with side-swept bangs. This chic combo will elongate your face and create a soft, feminine look.

Round

Round-shaped faces typically have little to no natural contouring in their structure. While this may seem like a negative thing, these face shapes have a lot of options when it comes to flattering layers. Long, mono-length looks give the illusion of a longer face (yes!), while shorter, choppy looks give the appearance of higher cheekbones and a more defined jawline (double yes!). An A-line bob is a great way to flatter a round face as it creates a more angular structure.

Heart-Shaped

Heart-shaped mugs consist of a broadened forehead, narrow jaw and more defined cheekbones. When catering to a heart-shaped face, it's best to layer the hair in such a way that they naturally fall away from the face as opposed to hugging it. This helps broaden the jawline and balance out your forehead structure. That being said, your haircut options, like those of the round-shaped faces, are endless. For shorter 'dos like a pixie or a long bob, go for soft, long layers. If you want to keep your hair long and lovely, get yourself long layers that graze the cheekbones and enhance your facial structure.
