Country Garden Camping Marquee Wedding

Country Garden Camping Marquee Wedding

via

Afternoon WWWers, I hope you are having a wonderful day thus far :-)

Oliver and Eve were married in the 31st May 2014 in a pretty village setting in Somerset. They held their marquee reception at Olly's family home in the beautiful gardens, perfect for a countryside camping affair.

Their wedding was super personal with many homemade touches and input from their loved ones. There were pretty blooms, stylish boys in bow ties and the cutest knitted cake topper.

Eve looked stunning in her Romantica of Devon gown, fabulous blue shoes and chic plaited high bun. WOW.

Thanks so much to Che Birch Hayes Photography for providing the lovely imagery today.

THE PROPOSAL | Olly took me back to Sidmouth beach where we both fell in love with one-another. He took me on a walk through the botanical gardens there and then out over-looking the beach where he got down on one knee. I was really surprised and just burst into tears. Once I was over the shock I managed to say YES. We went back to a hotel he had booked and spent the evening in a private spa with champagne and a hot tub and later that night enjoyed some more champagne under the moonlight on the beach.

THE VISION | I knew I didn't want your typical venue. I wanted something more personal and be able to put my own creative touch into the day. Rustic country wedding was the root we went down. The most important points to us were that the atmosphere was fun and we could have a great celebration.

I wanted a marquee wedding and Olly's family home was the perfect venue. They had lots of space and it's in the Somerset countryside. The field meant we wouldn't have to end the music at a certain time and people could camp and more importantly party all night.

There were lots of bits I wanted to incorporate like a photo booth and a wishing tree. The marquee meant we would have a big enough space to have everything in one room. This was important to us as we didn't want everyone splitting off into their own groups of friends we wanted everyone celebrating together and making a great atmosphere which is exactly what happened.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | Once we had decided on the venue and theme the planning seemed to never end.

My bridesmaid's aunty had a local marquee business we used, they were so helpful and everything I asked they sorted for me. I wanted festoon lighting to hang in the marquee with paper lanterns hanging. The marquee company sorted the lighting and I supplied the lanterns which turned out to look superb.

We had to book the toilets, generator, caterer, hire cutlery and bar all separately. This was quite a task. Olly was great at helping which was handy for me. I loved the thought of doing all the decorating and aesthetic bits but the booking of all these bits wasn't what I signed up for.

We wanted a hog roast as our main meal and we had cheese 'grazing platter' in the evening. Both favourites of Olly and I. We found a great local caterer who could do everything we asked for. They also own a little vintage style tea room where we went to meet them. I knew they would be perfect after the pictures she showed me and especially after the spinach and ricotta pie we tasted. They also sorted the bar staff as we decided to do our own bar. We bought some of the drink over a few months prior and then we ordered the rest in the day before. Having a free bar was great but I was worried we would run out of alcohol, however we managed fine although we did get through enough for a small army. Once we had sorted all the main bits I could concentrate on the décor and how I wanted it to look.

I work as a knitwear designer and knew I wanted to incorporate this in the day somehow. I knitted my own wedding bunting which I hung in the marquee and the pots on the tables had patterned knit I made tied around them. It was a nice personal touch without being too over the top, it was even complimented by the caterer offering me some money to knit some stuff for her daughter's wedding which was nice to know. Obviously I spent a lot of time on Pinterest and wedding blogs. Looking up different ideas and what I liked.

THE VENUE | Olly's family home seemed liked a great place to hold the reception. They have two big fields next to the home he grew up in and this was the perfect place for a marquee. We both grew up in the same town so it was nice to go back to our roots on this special day. The marriage took place in the village church 5 minutes down the road. It's a real rustic church which was a perfect setting for the theme, it was small yet big enough to fill with our friends and family to enhance the atmosphere.

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | Dress by Romantica of Devon, head piece by Halo, borrowed from my now sister in-law. Veil also borrowed from my sister. Shoes from Zara online - I knew I wanted pale blue shoes for my something blue so went on the hunt for the perfect pair. I bought jewelled shoe clips on eBay to add to them. I did all my own wedding dress alternations with help from my mum and grandma.

FINDING THE DRESS | The worst ever shopping experience. I love shopping and have always wanted to shop for my wedding dress but I had a budget of 1k and everywhere I went the dresses were too big and way too long. I didn't want to go to a boutique and end up falling in love with a dress way over my budget. I found it hard to see what it would look like in my size and the thought of spending all that money before you had even tried it was hard for me. I had gone to lots of shops and ended up with Romantica dress which was the last dress I tried. I ended up ordering another on eBay second hand as I was unsure when the dress turned up if it was what I wanted. I got everyone round to show them the dresses and they all loved the Romantica dress. So that's the one I went with. After a few alterations I felt much better in it.

GROOM'S ATTIRE | The grooms all wore their own suits, apart from Olly and the best man. They had the same blue Ted Baker suit. We bought the grooms men all the same bowties, pocket squares, bracers and socks to wear.

THE READINGS & MUSIC | We had a string quartet in the church. It's one of the things I really wanted. I came into Canon in d by Pachelbel. Hyms - All Things Bright and Beautiful and One More Step Along the World I Go. Reading Corinthians 13 by one of the ushers.

At the venue we had a DJ and cover band called SixMachine. The band played our first dance for us, an acoustic version of Let the Sunshine by Labrinth

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | I had 3 bridesmaids my sister and two friends who I have known since I can remember. They wore mint green long dresses with beaded tops from New Look. I had bought other dresses but my sister had lost weight and two weeks before the wedding was not happy with the dress. I had a mad dash and found the dresses, they came and all the girls looked great in them.

THE FLOWERS | Bridesmaids had gypsophila bouquets bound with blue wool same as the button holes. The men also had a heart shape button sewn on theirs; the bridesmaids had blue ribbon bows that hung down. My bouquet was a mix of roses and peonies in white and soft pink with silver leaves. I had a long silver sequin bow which hang down from the bouquet. The flowers on the table I did myself with the help of some great friends. I bought lots of different vases and ordered a mix or country flowers. We randomly placed them down the length of the long tables. I was fortunate enough that my mum-in-law helps the ladies in the church with flower arranging and so put in a little bit of extra time and effort for our very own wedding.

THE CAKE | I ended up ordering the cake from M&S. They had great reviews and very reasonably priced. The cake looked great and tasted scrumptious, I just added some flowers and knitted a heart bunting cake topper to add to it.

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | I had been looking for photographs and didn't know where to start. I knew I didn't want anything too formal. Being ordered around all day to get a photo here and there was not my idea of fun. My mum had been on a work course and met Che Birch-Hayes. She told me to look at his website and see what I thought. He was exactly what we were looking for a relaxed style and he would stay throughout the day capturing all the moments. On the day Che came with his assistant Becky and they were both amazing and respected what I wanted and didn't force me to have anything I didn't want. He also made us a video montage of the day with the music from our first dance. It made me cry the first time I watched it. It captures the day perfectly.

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | It was the extra bits that made it for me. The paper lanterns that lined the marquee and knitted bunting and cake topper were all so personal. I had chocolate lips and moustaches for the favours.

I also had photos of Olly and I with the guests printed on Polaroid style photos as name cards for the tables. I have always loved Polaroid's. They reminded me of my granny and granddad as they always used their Polaroid and I have so many great memories from this. The name cards also doubled up as wedding wishes instead of a guest book. I got everyone to write a note or draw a picture on the back and peg them to a wishing tree which was lit up in the corner of the marquee. It was great to sit down and read them all after the wedding, and it also meant everyone who came wrote something that we could enjoy.

I also had my dad make me up a photo booth frame in the shape of a polaroid picture. It was a DIY photo booth, we had a fancy dress box and people snapped away on their phones and cameras. He also made me lots of wooden signs for directions. Which I got stencilled and spray painted by my brother.

THE HONEYMOON | Santorini, the Greek Island. We went for 10 days and had our own veranda where they brought us breakfast every morning. Beautiful and luxury, just what we wanted.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | The vicar forgetting our second hymn in the church, and we sang it at the end of the service. Our first dance sang by the band so personal to us. And looking back at a marquee full of people enjoying themselves, thinking that I must be the most sober person here.

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Make sure you enjoy the day and don't worry about the things you didn't finish or forgot because nobody else will notice.

No one filmed our first dance, I wished they had as it was live by the band and never played by them before, I can never hear that rendition again and would have loved to have watched it back. So my advice would be think of things you might forget like speeches and get someone to film it for you even just on their phone.

If you want an easy life go to a venue where they sort all of it for you.
