Chic Country Tipi Wedding Filled with Flowers, Hay Bales & Dancing

Chic Country Tipi Wedding Filled with Flowers, Hay Bales & Dancing

via

WWW readers Laura and Matt were married on the 14 th June 2014 in a gorgeous countryside village followed by a tipi reception in a meadow. It was important to them both that they planned a party complete with flowers, hay bales and dancing. Sounds perfect to me :-)

I love the pretty florals, sweet simple décor and their brilliant music choices.

Laura had the most chic and elegant bridal look, opting for a stylish pony hair style with a White Rose gown. Totally gorgeous.

Thanks so much to the fabulous Kerry Ann Duffy for sharing her imagery today.

THE PROPOSAL | Matt knows how important my family are to me so he planned the proposal for a weekend when my sister was back in the UK (she lives in Athens) and all my family were at my parents' house. He then behaved very oddly all morning - even suggesting we went for a walk (if he could, Matt would drive everywhere!). We were then up in my room and I turned round and he was down on one knee behind me, despite bursting into tears I managed to say yes and then we enjoyed celebrating with my family, followed by lots of champagne with Matt's parents when we got back to our house.

THE VISION | When asked what he wanted, Matt would describe to everyone Bilbo Baggins birthday party from the first Lord of the Rings film! I had always wanted to get married at my parent's local village church and then celebrate back at their house - lots of flowers, hay bales and dancing. We both wanted a relaxed day and referred to it as our 'party' when talking about the wedding.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | We were engaged for 18months (I'm a little superstitious so didn't want to get married in 2013!) so I had lots of time for planning and probably spent my annual salary on wedding magazines! I also went to lots of wedding fairs - we wanted to source as much as possible from local providers. We met our wonderful photographer Kerry, at a small event in Tenterden Town Hall and my dad and Matt had a very happy afternoon with our beer suppliers, the Old Dairy Brewery, based in Tenterden, choosing their favourite Special Ale, followed by a trip to Biddenden Vineyard to choose the wine.

THE VENUE | We were married at All Saints Church in Biddenden, a beautiful village church local to my parents' house. We then hired our tepee tents from Beautiful World Tents and friends of my parents very kindly let us use their meadow.

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | My dress was by White Rose and was from Abigail's, in Headcorn.

I kept my accessories simple wearing just my pearl earrings which my sister made me when I was a bridesmaid at her wedding. My lovely MOH brought a beautiful and spacious handbag which I loaded up with my 'emergency supply kit'.

I was keen to look like myself on the day so I went for understated hair and makeup. Growing up my sister has always done my hair and make up for parties etc. so she was my obvious choice of stylist! We spent hours playing with different hairstyles but in the end settled on a high ponytail as it was more 'me'. We had a lovely afternoon with a makeup artist from Bobby Brown who taught us lots of tips and tricks, we brought everything she used and then Jo did an immaculate job of recreating this on the day.

FINDING THE DRESS | I went with my mum to a local dress shop and we tried on lots of beautiful dresses. I had always imagined myself in a strapless dress but having tried on lots of 'ideal' dresses the lovely assistant managed to persuade me to put on a dress I had completely ignored beforehand and needless to say I was very pleased she did as I loved it as soon as I put it on! I felt I couldn't buy a dress on my first outing so I did then go to a couple of other shops with my bridesmaids but none of the dresses measured up!

GROOM'S ATTIRE | The boys were all in Moss Bros hire suits but we brought the Alfred Sung ties which matched the bridesmaid dresses - I managed to persuade Matt to not go with the top hat and cane option!! Matt had three best men, all with their own job - James was with him at the altar holding the rings, Ian was our witness and Mark did a fantastic job with the best man speech.

THE READINGS & MUSIC | We had three readings - my sister-in-law read a second poem Yes, I'll marry you, my dear by Pam Ayres. My mum then read a passage from the bible, 1 Corinthians 13, and then my brother Nick read a poem, I'll be There for You by Louise Cuddon.

Whilst we had traditional hymns during the service and the Wedding March as we left the church, I walked up the aisle to Marry Me by Train. This song is a favourite for us both and one we had listened to over the years even before he had popped the question!

Matt chose our first dance song and so we had All of Me by John Legend which I had to admit was a perfect choice; coincidently we got in to the taxi in Bali to take us to the hotel and it was the first song that came on the radio. It's quite a popular choice now which we don't mind as it makes us both smile when we hear it playing.

During the afternoon and the meal we played a compilation of songs by the Vitamin String Quartet - a really talented group who play popular pop, rock and some golden oldies, but on string instruments! It was a great conversation starter amongst the guests as they tried to guess the song, and an idea we sneakily pinched from our friend's wedding the year before!

We had a disco in the evening, provided by Discologic, which was a great floor filler. On our Save the Dates we asked guests for the name of a song which would get them up and dancing - we provided Discologic this list and they played every song!

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | I was lucky to have three beautiful bridesmaids, who were all amazing (despite all leaving the UK after I asked them to be bridesmaids ... they assured me it wasn't personal!). They all wore dresses by Alfred Sung, rather than making them all wearing matching they each chose the style that best suited them and then we had them made in the same colour fabric.

My friend Ellie was my Maid of Honour and more than lived up to the roll, despite living in Texas she organised an amazing hen party weekend and put up with my unlimited stream of messages and emails asking questions, pictures of literally every aspect of the wedding and just my general twittering and worries!

My sister was a bridesmaid, similarly she lives abroad in Athens but was still incredible. She too received a zillion emails/phonecalls and was a calming influence when I worked myself up in the weeks before the big day. As well as being a perfect bridesmaid Jo is an artist and as such she designed all our stationery, save the dates, invites, our beautiful, giant table plan, the order of service and the name places, she even hand painted all the signs we used in the field on old pieces of wood I found in my parents garden! Jo also threw in a curveball to the bridesmaid dress shopping, in that she was 5 months pregnant on the wedding day!! It was lovely to know my niece was there with us - and luckily she found a great seamstress for some last minute alterations!

My lovely friend Catherine, from University days, was my third bridesmaid! She did a great job of supporting me even though she was in Australia up to a month before the day! She was also our witness at the church.

As well as my three adult bridesmaids, I had two beautiful flower girls and a very handsome page boy, in my cousins three children. Sophia, 9, and Maya, 2 were picture perfect in their little Monsoon dresses and shrugs, with matching butterfly's in their hair and Marcus, 7, looked very dapper in his miniature suit and tie to match the best men.

THE FLOWERS | We were very lucky with our flowers, my mum did it all for us! She did an incredible job, ably assisted by her lovely friend (who is usefully responsible for the everyday church flowers) - I sent them lots of pictures of flowers I liked and my mum and dad joined Matt and I at Columbia Road flower market for a day of research. They then took all my ideas and created lots of beautiful displays for the church - we had simple bunches of gypsophila on the end of each pew tied with pink and blue ribbons and the larger displays were created with pink, white and antique roses, gyp, and stocks. In the tents we had large jugs again full of stocks, roses and gyp. On each table we had a glass vase with a single rose stem and a sprig of gyp.

My amazing mum even made our bouquets - she went on a course at a local flower farm to learn all the tricks! I cried when I first saw them they were just so perfect and exactly what I had envisaged in my head. The flower girls had posies of gyp and the older girls had gyp with cream roses. My bouquet was gyp and then all my favourite roses, with some blue cornflowers and other flowers and greenery from my parent's garden.

The best men had buttonholes of ivy leaves with a sprig of gyp and mum made corsages for my sister-in-law, mother-in-law and herself of ivy leaves and a single rose.

THE CAKE | We found our cake at another local wedding fair -the local Tenterden Waitrose had a stall and a selection of their cakes on offer for sampling. Needless to say after my brother-in-law and Matt had 'sampled' the cakes there was nothing left for the other bride and grooms to try...!!

We went with a very simple, white three tired, Fiona Cairns, Victoria sponge which was delicious. It is a running joke in my family that when I was little I was adamant that I wanted to be a penguin when I grew up (!!) so my creative sister made us an adorable cake topper of a bride and groom penguin which was just the perfect finishing touch.

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | We met Kerry Ann Duffy at a small wedding fair in Tenterden and as soon as we saw the examples of her work we knew she was exactly what we were looking for and would capture our day just the way we wanted - we booked her there and then on the spot and were so pleased we did!

Not only is Kerry a very talented photographer who took lots of amazing pictures of our day but she's also a really lovely lady. She was really helpful in the lead up, visiting the venues and talking through exactly what we wanted and gently making some great suggestions when she could see a way of perfecting a shot. A number of our guests commented on how nice she was, she was so unobtrusive and we were amazed at some of the photos we got as we had no idea she had been there at that moment. We didn't want lots of formal photographs and make our guests stand around all day but Kerry went round and managed to capture everything and everyone perfectly.

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | Having purchased every magazine published between Matt proposing and our wedding day, as well as scouring lots of beautiful online blogs (and Pinterest, which became a bit of an addiction!) I collected a vast number of ideas. These were all kept in the 'wedding manual' which I was teased mercilessly for having (I'm a PA I can help it!) but we gradually whittled it down to our top few 'must haves'.

We kept it fairly simple, the tents themselves are so atmospheric and come with fairy lights which were really pretty so we didn't want to do too much to them. We went with light pastel shades and as much of an 'English country wedding' theme as we could achieve. Inside the tent we had lots of flowers but the tables were kept simple with a small flower arrangement and then my brother and sister-in-law made us the most fantastic wedding favours - glass shot bottles of homemade Sloe Gin, around which Izzy painstakingly tied a ribbon, they looked perfect! We also tied the napkins with a ribbon and Iz put a little sprig of Gyp into each one.

Beside the bar we created a 'photobooth' using a large picture frame we found in a charity shop and the contents of our fancy dress box; my brother-in-law also made us signs on sticks with various silly messages on which were a hit with our guests!

Outside we left the meadow as natural as possible - the grass and wild flowers were left to grow long and pathways were mowed to guide our guests to the tents/toilets/bonfire, and lined with shepherd crooks with flowers in jam jars and then later these were swapped for tea lights.

A local farmer provided hay bales which we covered with a mix of fabrics and dotted around the field, with a circle around the bonfire which proved very popular later on in the evening.

THE HONEYMOON | We were very lucky and for our wedding present Matt's parents paid for us to have two weeks at the Tembok Spa Bali resort. An out-of-this-world beach side hotel on the north of the island (away from the more touristy south so even more peaceful and remote) it only has 16 rooms and included a daily massage (and even better Matt didn't want his so they let me have two every day!). The food was delicious and the staff were so thoughtful and kind. Bali is a wonderful place to visit - when we weren't lying beside the pool there was lots to see; we had a once in a lifetime boat trip, leaving before the sun had come up so we were far out at sea in time to watch a stunning sun rise over the island and then we spent several hours watching a pod of dolphins swimming around our canoe. Needless to say it was very difficult to come home!

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | For both of us the whole day was just perfect from start to finish and we can't really single out a specific moment. That said the speeches were a real highlight - my dad is a great public speaker and did a wonderful welcome and said all the right things about Matt and I! Matt never got round to writing anything down so had to wing it; luckily he is a natural and could talk for ever! He did a great speech and he too said all the right things and had everyone in fits of laughter as he described how we met on Match.com - eloquently describing his decision to contact me with "she's fit ... wink". And of course his best man did a wonderful job inflicting just the right amount of humiliation, with the help of Matt's mum and her photo album, whilst saying some very kind words about us as a couple.

One of the other best men filmed the speeches for us and we have enjoyed watching them back a few times since; it's a lovely keepsake to have of the day too.

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | To those about to get married, take the time on the day to stop and take it all in. Everyone kept telling us to make sure we did and it was nice to take a few minutes for just the two of us on the day and really appreciate how lucky we were to be having such a perfect day with all of the people who mean a lot to us both. There are so many people to say hello to and catch up with it's incredible how quickly the day passes - after all the months of planning we were suddenly waking up the morning after and it was all over, but it was lovely to sit there and remember it all.
