Over my years as a make up artist I have had untold numbers of clients say that the wish the could wear a smoky eye but that it always looked awful and way too hard! When I've asked how they created their smoky eye 9 times out of 10 they say a black eyeshadow was involved and the result was more raccoon like, then the sultry look that they were aiming for!

A really dark smokey eye using charcoals and blacks, can look great but you need a lot of patience with blending and layering to get to the look you are going for, without tipping the balance into goth mode. This also means a smokey eye look requires a few eyeshadow brushes, this is key when it comes to blending. After all if you only have one eyeshadow brush, all you are doing is applying more and more eyeshadow to the same area, creating a heavy unblended eye make up and that is the problem usually with a smokier or more dramatic make up look.

So let's think soft warm colours, the beiges and coppers, the coffee and chocolate tones that look great against a cream shirt, a chunky knit or a military jacket. We are not talking your going out smoky eye look, although this could easily work for that too but more of a softer edged level of smoke. The nights are drawing in and the jumpers and jackets are starting to come out in all their cosy glory. The pastel and bright colours worn over the spring and summer are slowly getting relegated to the back of the wardrobe and into hibernation mode. This also means that your make up wardrobe has to be addressed too, as the colours that looked great with your summer brights, might not necessarily work with your seasonal wardrobe. So in this tutorial I am going to show you how you can get depth in the eyes and yet still be able to wear this look in the day or night.

HOW TO:

• Start by prepping your skin including eyes and lips with appropriate Skincare and Lip Conditioners. The changing weather at this time of year, can also mean a change of skincare may be necessary.
• Apply a primer all over the lid and set that lightly with powder. This creates the perfect base for your eye colours by preventing eye colours from creasing giving more longevity to the eye make up. (It's easier to do your eye make up before applying your foundation, so you can tidy up any fallout that can occur when doing smoky eyes)
• Next shape the brows by adding a brow colour that adds depth but that isn't too dark or hard, this keeps it a wearable look during the day too. (Aim for a colour roughly two shades lighter than the eyebrow colour is naturally to get a soft brow look). By framing the eyes you can then start with eye shadow application. If you do it the other way around and do eyeshadow first you may find you go heavy on the smoky and it then looks too strong once eyebrows are done too!
• Apply a taupe or warm brown coloured eyeshadow on the lower lid, either colour will work for this look just take the colour up to the crease. If you have a small lower lid like my model than take the eye colours to just above where your eyeball is (just under the socket bone) so that when you look in the mirror the colour is visible.
• Line the top of the lashes with a gel liner and blend over your liner, with a dark chocolate brown eyeshadow colour to soften any edges this adds to the soft diffused look of this smokey eye.
• Curl your lashes and then apply your mascara ahead of lash application (lashes are optional so 2 coats of mascara can also work with this look also). Then once more blend up from the lashes with a dark coffee colour to give more depth. That same colour can also be added as a soft liner alternative for below the lashes.
• Clean up the area under the eyes if any fallout from shadows have occurred, to ensure a perfect finish. Conceal any imperfections on the face and under eyes lightly ahead of foundation being applied.
• Then use an illuminating or radiance primer to give a soft glow to the complexion and add over this your preferred base something not too matte to keep it looking glowing. Tinted moisturisers or a light to medium coverage foundation will work well.
• A soft application of bronzer to continue with the warmth of the eye colours with a soft peachy toned blush added on top
• Finish the look off by lining the lips and adding a soft coral pink lip colour in a creamy texture to keep the lips looking hydrated.
