So You Got Your First Gray Hair? Now What?!

So You Got Your First Gray Hair? Now What?!

There are several things in life that we absolutely dread as we grow older (and wiser, of course!). Wrinkles, the laws of gravity ... and the inevitable gray hairs! While it may seem like your whole world is crashing down around you, it's not. Get yourself together, girl, because whether you're 25 or 50, there's a range of options at your disposal. You can disguise your silver locks or enhance them - either way, it's all preference. But, there are a few things you definitely should NOT do once the first sighting has been made.

What NOT to Do

Freak Out: While slightly amusing to those in the room around you, a panic attack won't help your situation. And it's important to remember that gray hair is a natural part of life! Look at it this way; you're officially an adult and being a grownup is pretty darn cool.

Hiding the Gray

Pluck It: And not because seven more will come to its funeral, but plucking can permanently damage your hair follicle. So unless you want to trade in your gray hairs for a bald head, don't pluck them!

Slacking on Hair Care: Because your hair is losing pigment and with time, your oil glands begin to shrink, it's not uncommon to notice how dry gray hair can feel. Defy the coarse, wiry nature of your white strands by using a pre- shampoo treatment like Kérastase Immersion Nutritive to pump your hair cuticles with moisture and use styling products with hydrating oils like Garnier Fructis Marvelous Oil Deep Nourish.

Blend in Highlights: You may at first deny that your hair is indeed graying and just say it's blonde. THIS is exactly why weaving in some highlights is the perfect fix to disguising your gray visitors. Camouflage those bad boys!

Embracing the Silver

Cover It Up: Easy fix! Either go to your salon professional ortry at-home hair color. L'Oréal Paris Superior Preference Mousse Absolue is an easy-to-use, automatic color for those who are new to coloring their own hair. Just be sure to follow the instructions! Using a root touch up wand, marker or spray is also an option if you're looking for a quick fix.

Va-Va-Volume: Big hair can seriously conceal anything. Grown out roots and grays just seem to go into hiding when blowdrying properly. Styling your hair with a lot of volume will temporarily hide the gray better - as will curling your locks!

It's all in the attitude! If you still feel vibrant and youthful, then your silver streaks have no business aging you. Beauty is never determined by the color of your hair, and if a little salt and peppa' is your thing, then rock it with confidence. Just care for your au naturel color by using a blue or purple-based shampoo like Matrix So Silver Shampoo to prevent any yellowing and using a weekly deep conditioner such as Kérastase Masque Substantif to keep your hair shiny and healthy. Also, opting in for an edgier, modern cut like an angled bob will really play up your color in a foxy way!
