Christmas Wreath DIY & Workshop with Bluesky Flowers | BLOVED Blog

via

A few weeks ago I was invited by our fave florist Liz from Bluesky Flowers to attend a Christmas Wreath Workshop at her studio in New Covent Garden Market. After an early 8am start (although I appreciate that's practically midday for florists!) a much needed coffee, and quick hello with Alexandria of The Bijou Bride, Rona from Flowerona and Ainhoa from Hello, Liz took us on a tour of the market to discover seasonal flowers and foliage as well as some of the, um, stylish Christmas decor on offer! If you're a bride-to-be considering doing your own flowers, or just love pretty things I highly recommend a trip (although to see the market at it's best a 6am start is best). Bring your car, if you're anything like me it will be packed full of blooms, vases and vessels within an hour!

Heading back to Liz's studio, we learnt how to create our own Christmas wreaths using a selection of foliage wired onto pre-mossed rings. The method itself is fairly straightforward, but the skill is in visualising what your combination of foliage is going to look like at the end!

YOU WILL NEED:

  • Wire florists ring filled with moss (available from florists wholesalers and garden centres)
  • Sharp scissors
  • Florists wire
  • A selection of festive foliage (eg. fir, euculyptus, berried ivy, box, grevillia)
  • Optional: Twigs, berries, dried fruit or other embellishments

METHOD:

Start with your plain moss wreath - Liz pre-prepared ours but you can buy ready made, or try yourself by packing moss tightly into the ring and securing with florists wire. Attach your wire by twisting through the metal ring a few times until it's secure.

Select your foliage and cut to similar lengths, removing any extra leaves to give a clean stem.

Choose a small bundle of foliage and attach with the wire, looping it around the ring.

Repeat, covering the wire and stems from the previous bundle as you go.

For a traditional look distribute the different types of foliage evenly around the wreath, or for a more contemporary look go assymetric!

Once complete add pinecomes, dried fruit, cinnamon sticks or other embellishments to suit your deco and finish with a coordinating ribbon.

If you'd like to make your own, but aren't quite brave enough to go it alone, Liz is running a series of two-hour workshops up until Christmas. The workshop costs £45 a head and will include a brief tour of the New Covent Garden Flower Market in all its twinkling and festive glory. The workshop will then address wiring techniques, examples of finished wreaths and the various styles that can be achieved. Materials will be provided and Liz will provide step-by-step demonstrations, as well as personal tuition to produce the perfect, truly unique holiday wreath.

Refreshments and morning pastries will be provided and participants will of course be able to take their work home with them to proudly display to friends and family. The wreaths should last right up until Christmas too!

To book your wreath-making workshop, or enquire about other seasonal workshops please contact Liz by email [email protected] or by phone on 07973 601 045
