Susannah & Harrison

Susannah & Harrison

I'm not sure we've featured a wedding before where EVERYTHING was made and supplied by the bride and groom's friends and family. Susannah and Harrison's big day is quite remarkable in that respect not to mention super stylish. The fusion of Christian and Jewish traditions is so personal to the couple and as they both work in Nairobi, Kenya, their "natural, rustic with an African streak" theme couldn't be more perfect.

Susannah made her own BEAUTIFUL wedding gown with the help of her Mum and her accessories are some of the most unique, simple-yet-show-stopping I've ever seen. And I must mention her plait, because I am jealous of it.

Ger ready to pin until your fingers ache folks.

The Ceremony

Susannah The Bride: Our ceremony was a fusion of Christian and Jewish. My father is a vicar and he led me down the isle and then all of us through the ceremony. The ceremony was our favourite part of the day. Every moment, from the music, the jewish prayers and the sermon were gifts from some of our closest friends and was witnessed by 200 of our favourite people. We enjoyed traditions like smashing of the glass!

The Colour Scheme

We chose December-stone blue and sea-glass green as the scheme of colour for the jars holding our garden flowers in the church and table decorations at the venue. The flowers were grown in my grandpas garden and we all had a go putting the bouquets together by torch light in the garden the night before. We had no idea what we were doing but we had so much fun doing it.

The Dresses

The bridesmaids dresses are similar to other twist dresses but I made them with a chiffon skirt to fall in the same way as my dress and also move in great shapes on the dance floor.

My dress has been my most ambitious project. When thinking about designs I was drawn to a classic and feminine style. I wanted to make a comfortable dress that would be light and that would float when I walked and danced. With great help from my mum, we created this effect with layers of light chiffon. The raw silk bodice was based on a racy night gown that my grandfather brought back from his travels for my grandma a few decades ago.

The Reception

At the reception at Cabourne Parva we had a theme of 'bring the outside in' - natural, rustic with a African streak. Both my husband and I work in Nairobi, Kenya and the bold african patterns worked well in the barn that is more familiar with music festivals than weddings. This beautiful setting needed very little changing. It was a playground of forest, lawns and fire pits. We did make our own outside lighting, another gift from a bridesmaid, Lauren Wallis.

We are so blessed to have very talented friends and family to enable us to have such a home spun wedding. I knew that the day was important but my husband and I were not prepared for it to be so joyous and full of love.
