Wish you could reap all the rewards of eye-opening liner, but don't have time for a dramatic cat eye? We discovered a trick that will change your life - or at least broaden your eye makeup horizons.

Here's the deal: While we usually think to apply eyeliner along the top of the lashes, you can actually accentuate the lash line in a more subtle way by approaching upper lids from a different angle: from below the lashes, also known as the upper waterline.

1. Use an eyeliner pencil that is narrow, and ideally something creamy and long-lasting that won't smudge or smear. We like Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil or NYX Cosmetics Slide On Pencil.

2. Make sure the pencil is freshly sharpened so you have a distinct point.

3. Lift the eyelid up to reveal the waterline.

4. Dot the eyeliner in between each lash to make the lash line appear fuller.

5. For something slightly more dramatic, connect the dots of the eyeliner along the line and smudge. This will give a similar effect to traditional eyeliner on top of lashes, but won't be as obvious to the, ahem, naked eye.
