Gotta Steal Some Shut-Eye? Essential Makeup Tips for Pre- and Post-Nap

We've all accidentally dozed off with a face full of makeup and woken up with the raccoon eyes to tell the story. But when you manage to find the time to grab a much-needed power nap in the middle of hectic day, who has time to take it all off and then redo her entire face? Can you have your beauty rest and makeup too?

You can. Here are a few easy ways to prep for and recover from a quick nap to return to your day looking as fresh as you did that morning:

Nap smart

Whenever possible, try to sleep on your back to avoid waking with pillow creases, lashes coated in mascara that get stuck together, and a ruined blowout.

Remove high-risk makeup only.

Based on your favorite products and how you tend to sleep, you know which one is likely to cause the biggest issue. Does your bright lipstick always smear? Does your mascara always end up on your cheeks? Just wipe one clean so reapplication is quick and cleanup is minimal.

If your eyeliner smudged, go with it!

Pivot your look midday by transforming your smudged eyeliner into a smoky eye. Add a quick bit of waterproof gel liner in your waterline and buff with a little shadow in your lash line for a softened look, suggests beauty expert and makeup artist Jennifer Trotter of Lip Service Makeup. This makes the darkness look intentional instead of revealing to the world that you stole away for some shut eye.

Conceal the evidence with orange tones.

The trick with covering up those giveaway under-eye circles is using a color correcting concealer like Urban Decay 24/7 Concealer Pencil in a peach or orangey shade, says Trotter. Using an orange tone will cancel out any blue that is under the eye area.

After this, quickly go back over the entire eye area (including the eye lid) and apply a brightening concealer - either in your exact skin tone or a hint lighter - to help illuminate the eye area.

Cream blush to the rescue!

Apply a cream blush like L'Oréal Paris Magic Smooth Soufflé Blush, blend with a dampened sponge and set with a little powder. The cream formula has more glow than powder, and when blended properly, can mimic a natural healthy flush, says Trotter.

When all else fails, apply a bold, red lip color.

It just takes a few minutes and will create the illusion of being more pulled together than you really are. Add dark glasses and poof! Instead of looking haggard, you'll look as refreshed and chic as your nap made you feel!

Rushing to look our best is not easy! What are your post-nap recovery tricks?
