How To: Metallic Lipstick

How To: Metallic Lipstick

We tend to use metallic makeup (and nail polish!) like they're neutrals. A swipe of gold eyeliner or silver nail polish is neither overpowering nor over the top. But full-on metallic lips? That's one of those hard-to-pull-off fashion show trends that is better left on the runway, right? Not necessarily.

The models at the Rodarte Fall 2014 runway show wore mouths full of plummy metal, but you can take a more subtle approach.

"Choose a high shimmer or frosted [ yes, it's making a comeback!] lipstick or lip gloss," says Francesca Roman, master makeup artist at Butterfly Studio Salon in New York City. You'll still get a metallic vibe, without looking like you've just arrived from the future. Try NYX Wicked Lippies in Power, a rose with silver shimmer.

To find the right metallic for you, use your jewelry as your guide. Do you look better in gold? Go for a gilded gloss, like YSL Gloss Volupte in Gold, alone or layered over another color. If silver accessories make your skin tone pop, try an icy pink, such as Maybelline Color Sensational Lipcolor in Pink Quartz.

Balance is key. The more metallic your lip color, the less flashy the rest of your makeup should be.
