5 Ways to Get More Mileage Out of Your Lash Extensions

We probably don't have to tell you how a set of false eyelashes can elevate your entire look in, well, a blink of an eye. In fact, the lengthening, thickening and darkening effects of falsies are so great, some of us would shell out big bucks just to have that fabulous fringe for a few weeks at a time. Enter lash extensions.

The in-salon service that involves a lash stylist gluing synthetic (or even silk or mink!) hairs onto each individual natural eyelash is a costly venture. So if you're going to splurge, you want to make sure your investment is going to last as long as possible, which can be up to two months if you're careful.

Team MDC asked Jo Mousselli, a nurse who created the medical-grade lash extensions Xtreme Lashes, to share her top five secrets for lash longevity.

1. Hands Off

It seems like a no-brainer, but keeping your fingers under control is crucial to the care of your extensions. Rubbing, tugging and pulling at your eye area will break the bonds of the adhesive, explains Mousselli.

2. Cleanse Carefully

"Avoid washcloths and any cleansing pads made from cotton," says Mousselli. They can snag or tear at your lashes, or leave little bits of lint between them. Instead, use lint-free pads or your fingertips, and a gentle, makeup-removing cleanser, like La Roche-Posay Toleriane Dermo-Cleanser, at the end of the day.

3. Skip the Mascara

The beauty of lash extensions is that you don't need to load on the mascara, explains Mousselli. "If you need a little extra pop, apply eyeliner," she says. We love L'Oréal Paris Voluminous Smoldering Liner in Black for a stunning liner look. If you must wear mascara, avoid waterproof formulas. Removing them can be way too labor intensive, which puts stress on your fringe.

4. Keep the Creams Off Your Lashes

The oils in rich eye creams and moisturizers can weaken the bonds keeping your extensions in place, says Mousselli. You don't have to forgo your skincare efforts altogether, but while you have your extensions, consider switching to a lighter-weight treatment, such as Garnier Moisture Rescue Refreshing Gel Cream. Don't apply any cream or serum too close to your eyes, as it could migrate onto your lashes.

5. Style Your Fringe

Every girl knows how important it is to brush her hair. The same is true with lash extensions. "Gently brushing your lashes will keep them straight, lengthened and healthy," says Mousselli. For this routine, try Maybelline Expert Tools Brush N' Comb.
