10 Impossibly Romantic Cities For Your Honeymoon

Paris, Venice and Rome are undeniably the superstars when it comes to the most romantic cities in the world.

But the only problem with choosing them for your honeymoon or romantic break, is that you've got to compete with lots more, equally loved-up pairs, posing in front of The Eiffel Tower/Rialto Bridge/Trevis Fountain, for the ultimate couple selfie.

Not quite the romantic picture you had in your head!

So, to help you find your own slice of urban bliss, we've scoured the globe to find you 10 of the most impossibly romantic cities - that you may not have thought of before.

From Scandinavia to South Carolina, these atmospheric backdrops are perfect for lazy strolls, long dinners, and loved-up memories...

Udaipur, India

Known as the Venice of India, Udaipur is perhaps one of the most peaceful settings in the entire subcontinent. Located in the vibrant Rajasthan province, on the banks of the idyllic Lake Pichola, this city has the most magical atmosphere.

Udaipur is crammed with charming nooks and romantic crannies, with palaces, temples, and historic buildings interweaved by the water, each one more intricate and interesting than the last. Basked in the most beautiful hazy light (like this whole region seems to be) if you think the chaos of India isn't for you, Udaipur will win you over.

Ljubliana, Slovenia

Ljubljana doesn't feel like a capital city, it feels more like one of those cool European towns you pass through and both, want to tell everyone about, but keep for yourself too, as a hidden gem!

Located on the banks of the picturesque Ljubljanica River with the city's castle towering overhead, this place looks like it's been lifted straight out of a storybook. Small enough to explore in just a couple of days, but charming enough to keep you there forever, with a thriving nightlife and culture scene, we think this gem is one that won't be hidden for long.

Hoi An, Vietnam

Hoi An is perhaps one the prettiest cities in all of South East Asia. Its entire Old Town is a UNESCO world heritage site, which means that while the tourists continue to flock, it should retain its special charm for years to come.

This lantern-clad city sits waterside, and at night candles floating on the river make it one special place to sit and enjoy a few bias (beers) or local cocktails with your other half. With world class food, incredible hotels and delightful sites to visit, along with tailors who can make you a whole new honeymoon wardrobe overnight, Hoi An has all you could need from city life, wrapped up in a charming pocket of old world Vietnam.

Bruges, Belgium

Chocolates, waffles, beer; there are a lot of (edible) reasons Belgium deserves a place on your bucket list. But Bruges (or Brugge) is reason enough. Every inch of this storybook Medieval city is packed with charm, stone bridges, cobbled streets, old church spires and pretty houses, all weaved together by a series of canals.

While Bruges has seen a surge of tourism in recent years (blame a certain movie), making a mid-week or off-season journey will give you a little space to explore. Hop on bikes (or maybe a tandem!) or take a midnight stroll and have the place to yourself (how romantic!), but don't let the crowds put you off this utterly idyllic little city.

Cartagena, Colombia

Think Colombia, you don't necessarily think romance, but the colourful coastal city of Cartagena is a couples' delight. Mud baths by a volcano, coffee on a square under a canopy of bougainvillea and partying 'til the wee hours with your other half, it's a city that's not only charming, but heaps of fun too.

Vibrant and youthful, rich and cosmopolitan, yet sleepy and laid back, Cartagena is one dynamic place to visit and whatever your vision of romance is, we reckon you might find it here.

Charleston, USA

Charm is a word we're using a lot when discussing these romantic cities, and it doesn't get much more quaint and indeed charming than Charleston. This Southern gem in South Carolina is elegant, pretty, friendly, and oh-so-romantic.

From independent boutiques and cute coffee shops (pie please!) to elegant homes and gorgeous gardens, this city is just made for exploring at your leisure. Like something out of a great novel (Charleston was used for some of The Notebook filming!) you might just fall in love all over again in this endearing, pastel-hued town.

Bath, England

Located in scenic Somerset, in England, Bath is a Georgian city that has never lost its splendour. Grand, sophisticated and utterly romantic, Bath is one of the most beautiful cities in the UK. Nestled on the banks of the river Avon, it's home to fine architecture, beautiful hotels, and of course, the Roman Baths.

If you've dreamed of a romantic getaway to the English countryside, a city stop in Bath is an absolute must. Wander the city hand in hand, take a dip in a steaming natural spring, or stay holed up in a charming guest house - you can always go exploring tomorrow!

Kyoto, Japan

Pink blossoms, red bridges, timber houses and bright fabrics, Kyoto is an atmospheric place that's draped in dreamy lighting and beautiful colours. The Japanese city is widely thought of as the country's most romantic, with hushed temples, sleepy streets and beautiful gardens, when you think of old world Japan - this is it.

Friendly and accessibly, with incredible food, scenic walks, and a sense of tradition you won't find elsewhere, Kyoto would make a unique and quaint honeymoon choice. (Don't forget to look out for a geisha!)

Marrakech, Morocco

Casablanca might be more renowned as the romantic stronghold of Morocco, but its Marrakech, in all its vibrant bustle, beautiful spaces and cavernous laneways that wins our hearts every time.

This North African city boasts some stunning luxury hotels and boutique guesthouses that make atmospheric bases for long days of exploring this maze of a city. Fantastic shopping, divine food, and an entrancing atmosphere all add to the allure of exotic Marrakech.

Stockholm, Sweden

For a major capital, Stockholm doesn't cut back on the pretty factor, with beautiful yellow buildings sitting next to icy crystal waters and a splattering of tiny islands stretching out beyond.

Multi-cultural, youthful and exciting, Stockholm's diversity enhances its traditional charm, certainly one to roam together - this city is full of surprises.
