French Wedding Decor & Details

Spring is the perfect season for French rustic weddings, with their focus on fresh foods and blooms. If you're a fan of shabby chic, you're going to love French rustic, as it was the birthplace of the style. We'll focus on all the pretty details to enhance your own Francophile affair.

Above, linen plays a huge role in these tablescapes, whether it is fine and white or linen "sack" as shown above, stretched across the table. Pair with bistro style menus at each place setting and boxed centerpieces, and you have instant French charm!

Love a good farmers' market? So do the French. Serve a simple spread of meats, cheese, fruit and bread alongside bottles of red and bubbly, and your small afternoon reception is covered. We love the glass jars displaying wildflowers and herbs that they've used to decorate the table (above).

Scour antique stores to find cool vintage bottles and champagne buckets. Weave greenery through both to create an engaging tablescape (below).

While a beautiful French rustic wedding can, of course, be expensive, they are never overly grand. Simple, thoughtful details abound. Lavender boutonnieres wrapped with twine are the perfect accessory for casual suits.

A cool favor is a nod to the French tradition of a couple writing their names on a padlock and affixing them to a bridge (throwing the key away in the river, naturally). Pass out your own padlocks to guests. Or, if you don't have any interest in a cake cutting ceremony, lock a padlock to a framed piece of fence that you can use later as a wall hanging.

Little details also help focus in lush surroundings. Above, this reception is filled with planted centerpieces and cascading greenery. The sweet Mr. and Mrs. chair covers (above) stand out just enough amidst the veritable garden surrounding them.

French springs and summers means a whole lot of outdoor weddings. Create elegant arches with drapes and a border of eucalyptus leaves. Line the "altar" with glass lanterns with pillar candles for a romantic sunset ceremony. As you can probably tell, greenery plays a large role in these weddings. You can even skip the tin cans and go with a swag on the getaway car.

For a French wedding, you can go traditional (above) with croquembouche (a mouthwatering tower of cream-filled profiteroles covered in sticky caramel). Or embrace the natural farm-to-table vibe and design a naked wedding cake decorated with ripe fresh fruit and flowers from the garden (below).

Send your guests home with a smile when you hand them a stack of pastel French macarons. We love these ones with golden sprinkles (above)! Or just say it in French with these Kraft paper bags (below) and fill them with French candies or lavender potpourri.
