Glamorous Gatsby 1920s Speakeasy Winter Wedding - Whimsical...


Ready for a dose of pure unadulterated glamour? Me too...

WWW readers Mr and Mrs Kyte were married on Thursday 6th November 2014 at The George in Rye in East Sussex. They wanted their guests to feel as though they had stepped back in time to experience the roaring 20s. They went for a Gatsby Speakeasy style and it worked just perfectly.

Mrs Kyte wore a sensational embellished dress by Ronald Joyce teamed with silver glitter Jimmy Choos while Mr Kyte donned an evening tailcoat, which looked very dapper indeed. There was a monochrome colour scheme with hints of silver and glitz. Oh yes.

THE PROPOSAL | Mr Kyte got down on bended knee on 5th November 2013, at the local firework display. Having fireworks made, 'Marry me'.

THE VISION | A Glamorous Gatsby Wedding. With our love for twenties glamour (thanks to the fabulous flappers of Baz Luhrmann's, The Great Gatsby). We wanted to bring some dazzling speakeasy style to our winter, wedding.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | A lot of research into 1920's, pinterest, wedding blogs, magazines, wedding fairs and asking for a lot of opinions from my Mum, Nan and Maid of Honour.

THE VENUE | The George in Rye. After staying a night in 2013, I knew instantly I wanted to get married at this venue. Sarah, the wedding coordinator, was lovely. Very attentive and put all my plans in place. Making my dreams come true.

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | Ronald Joyce. Veil, Tiara, Necklace and Garter, Isabella Grace. Earrings , Tiffany & Co. Bracelet, a gift designed from my Husband for our wedding day. Silver glitter shoes, Jimmy Choo. I was covered head to toe in my favourite scent from Jo Malone.

FINDING THE DRESS | Tunbridge Wells was the location, the second bridal boutique! After visiting the boutique and having my heart set on Jenny Packham. I tried on 'Aspen' and 'Esme' (thinking I'd find 'the one'). I then had an appointment at their sister company where I fell in love with 'The' dress. I felt I wanted more of a train and wanted to wear a long veil. Something I felt in Jenny Packham I could not achieve.

GROOM'S ATTIRE | Hired Evening Tailcoats with a white bow tie, cufflinks from Lanvin, a gift from his parents. Shoes from Russell and Bromley. Cologne, Tom Ford. Ushers and Page Boys also in similar attire. Best 'Sister' wore a dress from River Island and accessories from Debenhams.

THE READINGS & MUSIC | Music - Spent the best part of a year deciding on specific songs for our play lists for our big day. We began with soppy love songs for the beginning of the ceremony as guests arrive such as Ed Sheeran, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and Luther Vandross (a tear jerker) then continued with a lot of 1920's/ jazz music, including The Great Gatsby soundtrack, which played the rest of the day and evening.

The readings - Two very good friends of mine read for us, they took extracts from existing readings to make it unique for my husband and I.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | My Cousin and my very good friend. Both dressed in No.1 Jenny Packham, a range created for Debenhams .

THE FLOWERS | The Flower House Mayfield. A mixture of white Roses, Calla lilies, Gypsophila and Eucalyptus for foliage (they had a silver look about them). These were mainly in my bouquet. The bridesmaids bouquets, button holes and corsages were mostly roses and foliage.

THE CAKE | The Urban Pantry. Inspired by Peggy Porschen 'Tiffany Pearl' cake. With a 1920's twist adding a silver leaf tier and silver and white deco fans at the front. Bottom tear lemon sponge, middle tear Victoria sponge and top tear fruit.

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | Guests seated from 12.30pm , Ceremony at 1pm. Breakfast at 3pm. Evening guests arrive from 6pm.

All elements of our wedding had hints of the 1920's, the aim was for guests to feel like they had stepped back in time. Where do I start, I had accessories everywhere, in every corner, on every shelf! The colour theme was silver, white and black with a hint of glitz.

Our guests could tell straight away from the invite what the theme was. Many men dressed in bow ties and dinner jackets. And ladies wore embellished, fabulous dresses. My save the dates came from Not on the High street. My invitations were hand drawn caricatures of my husband and I. I then added extra touches to the invitations, adding pearls, crystals and ribbon.

The ballroom and the benson room was where the whole affair took place, upstairs at The George. I hand made glitter initials, date and Mr and Mrs, these were positioned on fire places and above the bar. I had a custom made silver sequin table runner used at the registrars table and also on the top table.

I had a selection of vintage tea lights on each of the tables, bought from lots of different shops through out the year. Table pearls and gems were used again purchased from high street stores. I had wind up cameras and fun props for guests to use throughout the wedding breakfast. The centre pieces consisted of roses and gyp with green foliage. Half were martini vases and the other were candelabras. These were positioned on top of silver sequin place mats. I hired ostrich feathers and positioned these in tall black vases, these were used on tables in the bar area.

Silver, vintage photo frames were bought throughout the year, I liked the idea of having one off pieces. Having the 'shabby chic' feel where frames and tea lights didn't necessarily match. Used a mixture of small glass and silver flower vases scattered on fire places. I didn't want a spray of flowers for the top table, instead I used a mixture of individual vases, all different sizes that filled up the top table. A lot of candles and tea lights were used around the venue, these were all 'Wedding Day' by Yankee Candle.

I love East of India, they have a range called 'Time to Drink Champagne and Dance on the Table' , this was a key line throughout my day. I used ribbon with this on , tied around each napkin. Also signs scattered around the venue. This line was used on the front of my invitations. My seating plan came from Not on the High Street, same as my save the date cards and the name places. I added my own touch to these by sticking crystals to add some sparkle.

I had personalised signs made which I used at the guest book table, treat table and at the bar. I chose white organza chair ties with vintage crystal brooches, to give an extra touch to the chairs. I hired 'love' lights from a local florist, found at a wedding fair.

The treat table consisted of; macaroons, meringue kisses, glitter cake pops, white bow tie and red lip biscuits, candy floss, pop corn and Haribo sweets. We bought a vintage polaroid and made our own photo booth. This consisted of a frame bought from amazon, silver foil curtain and some props. This was the perfect place for testimonials from our guests too.

Food at The George in Rye was incredible in the day and evening. Even down to the ladies loo, there was a 'powder and perfume' box containing everything that a lady would need to freshen up.

In the evening we hired a band called 'The Chaps' a local band which we had seen at a previous wedding. They sung live, a range of songs , giving the songs their own unique twist. They also Dj'd . If ladies had sore feet I had a boxes of flip flops tied with ribbon for them to have. Dancing was a must!

Towards the end of the evening I had a 'sparkler send off'. We all went outside and guests created an archway of lit sparklers for my husband and I to run through, a lovely way to finish. Having sparklers was a perfect reminder of our engagement.

THE HONEYMOON | Minimoon in Dubai. Honeymoon in South Africa, on Safari and beach escape in Mauritius.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | Entering the room and walking down the aisle with my dad seeing all our family and good friends.

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Ensure you take a quiet 5 minutes with your 'new' husband to take it all in. We went into the ballroom just before the wedding breakfast. This was incredible to see it all set up as planned, before the rest of the guests came in. We had a social media ban as we didn't want anything on facebook or instagram. Instead we created a wedding app which was great for all guests to add their pictures too.
