Geri Hirsch's Internet Wedding, Deserted Island and Sick Sense of Smell

DIY is in her DNA. "It's how I was raised," says Geri Hirsch, the face behind the blog Because I'm Addicted and co-founder of the how-to hub Leaf.tv. "We didn't have a TV, so we did art projects and went outside and made things. My mom would buy me plain clothes, like just a white sweatshirt or some overalls, and I would paint them or alter them." Seems she's been painting and altering ever since.

In honor of the tactile nature of our new fall accessories, Geri created a collection of exclusive how-tos -and inspired us to do a few things ourselves, as well.

Read on for her ideal deserted island scenario, her secret superpower and insider details on her Internet-famous wedding to a man who knows espresso.

Congratulations on your wedding!

Thank you!

Which the whole internet knows about. That must be kind of weird.

Yeah, it's pretty weird. I shared a lot about the wedding leading up to it and then did a whole diary of my wedding day on Snapchat, including me going down the aisle. It definitely sparked a lot of conversation around our wedding.

Was that fun or overwhelming?

No, I loved it! It was a way to connect with people about my most important life event in a way that I couldn't without that platform. People just got me, in that moment, talking about how I felt, feeling the adrenaline. It was really cool to share it.

The do-it-yourselfer that you are, did you reach out to anyone for help planning?

Oh, there was a major team behind it. I was like the art director. It was not a do-it-yourself wedding at all. There were no mason jars. I was not writing anyone's name on anything. It was a very tight, well-run operation.

What was your favorite decoration?

We worked with Connor Stationery for our bespoke wedding invitations, and they created this really beautiful monogram-my husband's name starts with a D and mine starts with a G-which was at the top of our invitations, and then we used it as an element throughout our wedding. On our wedding day, my husband had it turned into a little diamond necklace. So now, every day I wear the monogram around my neck.

What were you thinking when you walked down the aisle?

I don't really know exactly what I was thinking, but I had a calmness that was really reassuring. I knew walking down that aisle that I was marrying THE guy that I was supposed to marry and I couldn't ask for anything more.

Is he very creative, your husband? Does he have any of that DIY spirit?

He is a do-it-yourselfer in a very different way. He's one of five, and in order to get their driver's licenses they needed to know how to change the oil, change a tire and drive a stick shift. He knows how to fish and how to hunt and how to fix anything. He can do electrical. Start a fire in the middle of nowhere. He's a true Boy Scout.

Does he ever cook for you?

Yeah! He's an incredible cook. Whenever he does anything, it's great. But every morning he does make me an almond milk latte. And he's very serious about his espresso. He knows everything there is to know about how to make the perfect espresso shot, so the coffee is always delicious.

I bet it tastes great. It probably smells so good in the morning, too. You clearly have a sense of style. What would you say is your strongest of the five senses?

I kind of have an incredible sense of smell. But that's so not sexy. No joke, I'll come into a room and it will be five hours later and I'm like, "Oh, did you just have Doritos?" And it's literally spot-on.

You know how they say scents trigger memories. Do any other senses do that for you, too?

Yeah, definitely music, which would be sound.

Is there a song that comes to mind that always brings you back?

I mean, every song takes me back in some way. I'm sure when we hear Drake 15 years from now we're going to think, "Oh my gosh, that is so 2015. Remember that? We were dressing like it was the '70s in the fall."

You're moving to a deserted island. What four things do you bring from your kitchen?

A chef's knife and tongs that I use all the time. I'm really into my griddle right now and really good shears, or actually let's replace griddle with Vitamix. I'm obsessed with my Vitamix. All my smoothies are made in the Vitamix.

So you would definitely take your Vitamix to the desert island?

Well, am I going to have electrical plugs and chia seeds and all my accoutrements?

Let's just say "yes." In our fantasy desert island world, you're going to have an outlet.

And Ryan Gosling will be there too, right?

Well, should we ask your husband?
