At this time in the season it's a little late to commission a custom evergreen arrangement from a luxury florist. But ring a jingle bell, because the folks at floral design studio Fiori are angels: they've volunteered to show us how to dress up a store-bought fir circle with just a few easy tips.

What you need:
A wreath, 26 to 28 inches wide
A spool of wired ribbon
Accents like pine cones, fruit, artificial flowers, succulents, glass ornaments, other foliage-pick things that go with the style of you home and the size of your door
20 or so pieces of six-inch wire
A 10 to 12-inch wire for a back fastener
A hot glue pot or gun
A wire cutter

1. Start with a simple green wreath that you can buy at many grocery or home improvement stores. Attach a wire or hanger to its back if there isn't one already.

2. Collect some wares. Fiori's creative director Leigh Grossman recommends wired ribbon with reversible sides. Six-inch wire pieces for fasteners. Camellia, magnolia and/or eucalyptus leaves add depth to the evergreen needles. Pinon cones are sturdy, earthy accents. Fruit, as well, can be used for color. Artificial or dried flowers add softness.

3. A hot glue pot or gun will come in handy. Heat it up now.

4. Prop the wreath up in a stand or agains a wall-somewhere it won't move around too much but where you can lift and flip it when necessary.

5. Cut the ribbon into four 12-inch pieces. Lay them in swaths across across four curves of the wreath. Fasten these ribbons at both ends with wires, leaving two to three-inch tails on either end. Curl the tails back into the wreath needs as though they were the natural loops of a bow.

6. Once you have these four pieces attached, cut another eight loops and attach each of them with wire to the end of a six-inch wire. (See image.)

7. Attach these loops near the ribbon already in the wreath to give the appearance of a lush bow with four loops. (It also saves on the amount of ribbon you use.) Be sure to put a full bow at the top of the wreath, as this will draw the eye up. Do not neglect the insides and edges of the wreath to accent its dimensions.

8. Once you have all the ribbons attached and wired to the branches of the wreath, decide what you'll situate where. Wire your fruit, foliage, cones and artificial flowers. You can use sticks glued and wired to each item to help gauge your placement options. Set out each item before gluing or wiring it to the wreath.

9. Gossman suggests placing your items unevenly around the wreath so as to create a natural seeming asymmetry.

10. When you have each item where you'd like it, begin by gluing the hardier elements like the cones and fruit. Once those are in place, wire in the additional foliage. Finish with breakable or delicate items like glass ornaments and artificial flowers.

11. Fix everything to the wreath then step away for a while or look at the wreath in a mirror to gain a fresh perspective on your work. Adjust anything that seems out of place.

12. Hang the wreath at eye level on your door, window or wall.

13. Wait for the doorbell to ring and prepare to receive some compliments.

Thanks to owner Miles Johnson and creative director Leigh Grossman at Fiori Floral Design for showing us how the pros do it.
