Starting Over: How to Reboot Your Hair for 2016

Here at Makeup.com, we are lucky enough to have a panel of experts to sound off on all of our favorite beauty topics. Today, for example, we asked Craig Wcislo, hair guru and mentor stylist for
in Santa Monica, CaliforniaGet your hair to a healthy place. , to give us the scoop on how we can give our hair a good refresh in the New Year. Go under the knife, er, scissors.

The New Year is all about starting fresh, and while I avoid New Year's resolutions, I do believe it's a good time to re-evaluate your routine and get out of any ruts you've fallen into. This is especially true for our hair. It's easy to get "stuck" in a routine or a look. Here are some ideas on how to help break yourself out of old patterns.

Rethink your hair color.

After abusing your hair for most of 2015, start the New Year off on the right foot with a professional conditioning treatment that will restore your locks (my favorite salon formula is Kérastase Fusio-Dose). Have a professional stylist examine your hair and customize your treatment to address your specific concerns. In-salon treatments may be pricier, but the payoff is worth it, as your stylist will be able to target your hair needs, and you won't end up with 20 useless products under the sink, collecting dust.

Loosen up your pony.

Instead of opting for the usual quick trim, try talking to your stylist about a new cut that will suit your hair type and overall look. And remember to keep an open mind to his or her suggestions! As stylists, it's our jobs to know about hair, bone structure, styling techniques, and what is realistic for your lifestyle and beauty routine.

Just because you've always been a platinum blonde doesn't mean that is the only color you can rock. Consider adding more dimension to your hair, or, if you've always played it safe, try adding some subtle tones with a semi-permanent color to spark it up! You can add peach or pink tones that will fade out in a month, so you're still transforming your look in a low-risk way. For our brunettes, adding more depth and tone to your brown locks can revamp your look in a similar way. It's also a great way of making the most of the winter when the sun won't bleach out your ends.

As much as we all like a good pony, using any kind of elastic band - even the fabric-covered ones - can cause breakage. Invest in some hair clips and/or bobby pins and start playing around with messy buns. This is an ideal way to update your look and practice your styling skills with third-day hair.
