Свадьба - The First Moments

The First Moments

This past weekend my friends Gyda and Steve were married in the vintage rustic New-England-style Inn at the Northampton Hotel in wintry Massachusetts, and I was super happy to photograph the proceedings. I've known Gyda for a couple of years via the New York indie-theater scene, and she has been one of the people central to my recent return to acting. Early this summer she directed me in Shaun Prendergast's play The True History of the Tragic Life and Triumphant Death of Julia Pastrana, the Ugliest Woman in the World, a piece performed entirely in the dark; our sound designer for that show was her then-boyfriend and now-husband Steve. Their ceremony is short and sweet, mixing the best respectful aspects of the formality of the occasion with the easy natural openness that is so vital to both of them. There's a sudden rush of overwhelmed teary joy, some honest laughter, a sense of the power of the moment, and then suddenly they are husband and wife, turning to walk past the assembled friends and family as a newly-minted pair, the same and different. The wedding is held in the Wiggins Tavern, an 18th-century New Hampshire inn that was taken apart, transported, and reassembled in the basement space of the Hotel Northampton in 1930. It's snug and dark and firelit, which means I am shooting much more with the flash than I'd like, but what's a guy to do? In this shot Gyda and Steve are turning toward the exit; they'll catch their breath for a moment, and then we'll start posing relatives and friends for the family photos. The moment feels unguarded to me, and their faces show a mix of happiness and excitement spiced with a dash of glazed shock.
