The mesmerising town of Matera is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. If you haven’t heard of it (like I hadn’t before visiting) but are planning a trip to Italy, I’d highly recommend adding it to your itinerary! Walking around the cave dwellings of the Sassi (ancient town) will make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time - and you’ll soon see why it’s primeval-looking scenery was chosen by filmmakers as the location of quite a few famous biblical period motion pictures
