Poet Rabindranath Tagore once described the Taj Mahal as "a teardrop on the cheek of eternity." Emperor Shah Jahan commissioned the palace in 1631 in memory of his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died during the birth of their 14th child. Here, it reflects in the glittering al Hawd al-Kawthar, named for the "Tank of Abundance" promised to Mohammed. (
