Beauty vs. the Weather: How to Tackle 4 Common Beauty Mishaps

beauty solutions for cold weather

Aw the joys of autumn. Summer’s humidity subsides. Cooler temperatures make way for the highly anticipated sweater weather. The leaves change and the lipsticks get darker. But seasonal changes are not all pumpkin spice lattes and layers of cashmere; weather transitions can also create some cause for concern when it comes to our beauty routines. This year, we’re tackling climate concerns before Mother Nature gets a chance to turn on us.

1. Running Eye Makeup

When that fall breeze starts to feel like more of a wind tunnel, eye makeup is the first to go. Thankfully, black tears running down our cheeks can be beat.

Prevent it: Waterproof isn’t just for summer pool parties, waterproof mascaras (like our favorites L’Oréal Double Extend Waterproof Mascara and Yves Saint Laurent Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils Waterproof) and waterproof eyeliners will hold up against watery eyes. Priming the eye area with an eye shadow base prior to makeup application is also good insurance.

Fix it: When it does start to run, the best option is to run with it. Smudge out the smearing eye makeup with a clean finger, a cotton swab or a smudger brush, for a smokier feel.

2. Dry Skin

Would it be too bold to say dry skin is the bane of our beauty existence? A blemish or two can be concealed, but there’s no way to achieve an even foundation application if the skin is plagued by parched areas.

Prevent it: Exfoliate on a weekly or biweekly basis to slough off dead skin and allow moisturizing creams to penetrate more deeply. Because the skin does most of its repairing while we sleep, we recommend upping the usage of night creams. We always reach for The Body Shop Vitamin E Nourishing Night Cream and Cosmetics 27 Baume 27.

Fix it: Ease up on the face makeup until the skin has rebalanced. Swap liquid foundation, which can cling to dry patches, for powder. Try highlighting another feature with a shimmery eye or bold lip.

3. Flyaways

Just when we thought our hair was safe, that humidity induced frizz gets replaced with flyaways. Overheated rooms and sharp temperature changes suck the moisture out of hair and thus dry strands stick out wherever and whenever they please.

Prevent it: Sleep with a humidifier to counteract the drier air of the season and deep condition with a weekly treatment to keep hair hydrated. We love Matrix Biolage Ultra-Hydrating Balm and Gloss Moderne High-Gloss Masque.

Fix it: Tame flyaways with our quick 1-minute smoothing trick.

4. Flaking Lip Color

Saying no to a plum pout or any fall’s rich lip colors is simply not an option. Also not an option, cracking and flaking lips.

Prevent it: Chapped lips need tons of TLC. We never leave home without a stash of Maybelline Baby Lips. When we aren’t in arm’s distance to our beloved lip balm, the number one method of prevention is resisting the urge to lick lips, which only makes lips drier in the long run. And when it comes time for the berry and burgundy lipstick, choose an ultra moisturizing formula like our personal favorite, Giorgio Armani Rouge Ecstasy.

Fix it: If flaking lip color has somehow made an appearance, the first line of defense is moisture. Instead of reapplying the lipstick, pick up a tinted balm for a double whammy of color and hydration.
