Turns out, the shades that we hide behind when running errands without makeup or avoiding paparazzi (real or imagined) are just as effective at standing out in the crowd. Case in point: Coachella. In that sea of youthful seraphim taking fashion risks, there were any number of startling new frames.

Beyond the basic cat eye or the aviator, designers are getting increasingly playful. Glitter, patterns, sweeping angles and tinted lenses appear on the new sunglasses. These aren't just utilitarian sun shields but statement pieces worn front and center, on your face.

Here are some of our favorite new styles as seen on Coachella festivalgoers.

Concentric Cat Eye

Actress Kiernan Shipka slid on a pair of these circular lenses enveloped by a wiry cat eye. This interlocking of geometric frames creates a striking shape that nevertheless doesn't overpower the face.

Aviators with Tinted Lenses

The aviator is an enduring frame because of its flattering practicality: They are comfortable and light yet oversized enough to be instantly stylish. Add a pop of color to these with tinted lenses for a subtle burst of personality.

Octagonal Frames

When the usual sunglasses shapes just won't suit, pick up a polygon. This play on the circular style gives you a bit of an edge. Oversized and fashion-forward, these shades are a sophisticated way to look different.

Clear and Round

Neutral sunglasses needn't lack personality. Oversized shades in a crystal frame look fresh and clean with anything.

Bold Tortoise

Tortoise shell frames are a classic summer style. But this season we're seeing some strong shapes in exaggerated flecking. In all ways the trend here seems to be to go big with chunky frames and in-your-face patterns.

White Sight

Especially if you have a nice summer glow, white sunglasses can accentuate your coloring. Keep the shape of the glasses clean for a classic look that's nevertheless different from the throngs of black and brown frames.

Rosy Outlook

Vintage ladylike frames can play up your feminine style or provide a counterpoint to an androgynous look. We like peach or pink frames that, like the white sunglasses above, can complement your complexion.

Glitter Glasses

Put on your party look with a pair of festive shades. A slight sparkle in the sun adds some glitz to any outfit. The styles below stay safe enough in their sprinkle of glitter to be worn to events outside of the more adventurous festival circuit.

Floral Frames

Plant some petals on your face with shades bearing a bouquet. These sunglasses with flowers resemble a more colorful tortoise pattern at a distance, but in close range they provide a pretty surprise.

Sharp Focus

If you have a flair for the dramatic, incorporate some seriously angular cat eyes in your summer wardrobe. The outrageous style of the glamorous glasses don't stop with their sharp outer peak: Many make good use of luxurious materials to heighten the high style of these shades.

Split Screens

A simple and classic wire frame is always in style. Pick up ones with sweet contrasting stripes on the lenses to add an interesting layer.
