"DRESSING UP GIVES ME ANXIETY. A lot of the decisions I’ve made in my life—from what restaurant to choose to what career to pursue—have been based on whether or not I can wear jeans. I can probably count on two hands the number of times I’ve gotten dressed up. There was my 1994 junior prom outfit: I went braless in a beige slip with cork platforms. My date and I partied afterward at a Chicago Marriott blasting ‘Sympathy for the Devil’ ’til we got busted by hotel security. Then there was senior prom, when I skipped the footwear altogether and went barefoot in a ratty muumuu that showcased my hairy armpits. Prom started at seven and by eleven I was wandering, stoned with Sean Timbo, down Michigan Avenue. When I was a junior in college, I wore an old kimono with orthopedic shoes to an Oscar party high in the Hollywood Hills.
