Wedding day makeup tips with Tori Harris Makeup Artist

Written by: louise

Morning lovelies!

A couple of weeks ago I was invited along to The Bingham hotel in Richmond for a bloggers beauty session with makeup artist & hair stylist Tori Harri s. It was a really fun day with some of my fave fellow bloggers, where we were taught Tori's makeup tips and tricks for flattering everyday makeup looks and how to pump up the glamour for an evening event. I've never been that good at doing my own makeup, learning mostly from magazine tutorials and makeup packaging and never really knowing what suited my skin, face shape and eyes. Tori quickly helped with some easy do's and don'ts as well as some fab product recommendations (which are slowly working their way into my makeup bag!)

Tori herself is one of the loveliest people in the wedding industry. With wedding mornings often a sort of organised chaos, she's the perfect calming influence, and immediately makes you feel comfortable, making sure everything is organised and on schedule so you can relax and enjoy the time with your girlfriends before the ceremony. I'm delighted to welcome Tori to b.loved today to tell you a bit more, and share some of her top tips for looking your very best on your wedding day

Hi Tori, please tell us a little bit about yourself & your business. Hi Louise, I am a makeup artist and hair stylist! I work mostly in weddings, editorial shoots and commercials. What do you love most about bridal makeup? I adore being a part of someone's special day, weddings are such enjoyable days and it is really special to spend the morning with the bride and her friends and family. Feeling your best on your wedding day is so important and feeling truly beautiful really helps to make you feel amazing, creating hair and makeup looks for brides that give them this feeling is so special and it really is a privilege to be involved in so many bride's special day. What should brides consider when choosing their wedding day makeup look? I think colours and tones in the dress and flowers are important, as you don't want to go for anything that might clash, for example if you have a strong pink in the bouquet a coral lipstick might look too much in the photographs. Often if the wedding is more vintage themed then brides incorporate a vintage twist into the makeup for example if you're wearing a 50's style tea length dress I often have brides choose to compliment this with a red lip. I also get brides who take the theme of their wedding and go the opposite with their hair and makeup to ensure the wedding doesn't get swept up in the theme and it is still very true to them - again with the vintage example of the styling some brides choose to keep the hair and makeup very contemporary. How can brides ensure their skin looks their best before the big day? It's inevitable that the pre-wedding stress can ultimately lead to the odd spot on the wedding day but I really urge brides not to pick at spots, instead use a gentle exfoliator, try not to wear makeup or too much concealer on it and don't touch! We all know spots get worse when we pick at them although it's easier said then done! Although facials may sound like a perfect pre-wedding treat don't get the first one too close to the big day as your first facial will pull out all the toxins and can cause you to have more spots then before - although after a couple of weeks your skin will of course look far better! Speak to you therapist about the type of facial you are interested in and the timeline they recommend. The easiest tip of all - drink plenty of water! Top tips for making your wedding makeup last through the tears and laughter of a wedding day? Firstly waterproof mascara! The quickest way to ruin your makeup is with panda eyes so I always make sure I use waterproof makeup on everybody in the morning not just the bride! I also recommend using a few individual lashes as even though the mascara is waterproof and wont run when it gets wet your lashes can clump together slightly so adding a few individual lashes not only looks great but just helps to maintain a great look even after a few tears. What are your favourite tried-and-tested bridal makeup products? I have quite a lot my kit certainly isn't light! I don't think any one brand has the best of everything so I like to mix it up and try lots of different brands. I love Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation for a light coverage foundation or Illamasqua Skin Base Foundation for a fuller coverage foundation - I think getting a flawless base is one of the most important aspects of bridal makeup. It's also important to have a long lasting makeup so I always use setting sprays - at the moment I am loving NYX setting sprays as they have a matte finish and a dewy finish spray so my brides can choose the finish they want to their makeup. What would you recommend brides carry in their wedding day emergency kit? I make little touch up kits for my brides and include in them a pack of tissues, translucent power and a little powder puff, concealer and cotton buds to touch up under the eyes in case of any tears and lipstick and a lip brush. For brides wearing eyeliner in the waterline I recommend carrying a pencil to top up too but everything else should last well throughout the day! How can our readers get in touch with you?
