Simple Wedding Dresses

We all have different versions of a dream wedding dress. Most likely, your dream dress has even changed over the years along with the rest of your style. When I was 10 and lived for girly girl dresses, I fantasized about an Edwardian era dress like the one Anne Shirley wore on Anne of Green Gables. Now, as more of a wool sweater and jeans kind of gal, the wedding dresses that I find myself drooling over are those that are blessedly simple. These 10 dresses are all about the unadorned, the unbeaded, the unstructured. Just look at this dress above- the exquisite tailoring on this bodice creates a dreamy, but not fussy look. Below, this off-white flowy gown features loose, silky straps and a deep statement back.

Nothing is quite so chic as a slip dress (as proved by Carolyn Bessette Kennedy's legendary gown). This dress above is a modern bride's fantasy-comfortable and silhouette-hugging. I am completely in love with this Swiss dot blouson dress below. It's timeless and soft with lots of movement (handy for a bride who wants to dance all night), and (bonus!) adds extra shape to athletic frames.

If you're looking for a little va-va-voom, but don't like all the styling of a corset dress, a simpler option is a sexy sheath dress. This one below features a fabric on the bodice with a slightly iridescent finish. Otherwise, the dress is completely plain, with its darts giving it extra dimension. All eyes will be on you-no beading required!

If you love simple, but are afraid of being too plain or not "bridal" enough for your more traditional wedding, look for minimalist detailing. Pick a lace dress where the silhouette is a bit less structured (above, left) or a dress like the one above (right) with small gathers and a draped neckline. The dress below is crisp and contemporary with a twist in the fabric at the waistline. These little tailoring details add extra visual interest, but still keep the dress streamlined.

With such simple dresses, you should follow suit with your accessories. These last two dresses feature thin ribbon sashes tied in casual, sweet bows. Both enhance the more laidback vibe of these wedding gowns.
