Cool girls are also very busy girls. So having a couple of sharp essentials can make dressing in the morning so much more of a breeze. Open a well-dressed, well-connected woman's closet and you'll likely see a couple of Equipment silk shirts among her go-to pieces.

It's no surprise, then, that ultimate cool girl Kate Moss has teamed up with the Parisian label to bring her brand of British rock-and-roll edge to their fall collection.

We chatted with Brett Ramey, head of creative at Equipment and a close personal friend of Kate's, about the inspiration for the collection, how to style skinny scarves for fall and what makes Kate so great.

We love the combination of modern French elegance and British cool in the Kate Moss x Equipment partnership. How did it come about?

Kate and I became friends through Kate's agent-so for years we've been very close. So I met Kate several years ago, and we were working with Daria [Werbowy] (she did that series of self-portraits) and then the natural evolution was to have Daria photograph someone else, and there really wasn't anyone else that made sense other than Kate. So we called Kate and asked, "Do you want to do this?" and then the campaign evolved into a collection, and that's sort of how it evolved. Really Daria was our joining force.

There's an obvious nod Bowie with the lightning bold print, but what was Kate's overall inspiration for the collection?

I think it was sort of what she wears every day. It's slightly '90s, slightly rock and roll. There's a little bit of glam with the lamés, and that's all very Kate.

Nikolai von Bismarck shot this campaign at Moss's country home in the Cotswolds (along with model/friend Susie Cave), and you can really see the intimacy in the photos. What was the vision for the campaign?

She loves Susie Cave. She idolizes Susie Cave, thinks she's one of the most beautiful women she's ever seen. And so there was no question-Susie was the first person she called out. And then she invited Ella Richards to be in the campaign, and Ella is actually her goddaughter (she's Lucie and Marlon's daughter, and Keith Richards' granddaughter). So she kept it close to the family-it was shot at her house out in the country. And it was a small crew, it was all friends there, but that's sort of how the entire collaboration has been. Really, that was the key to its success. She was completely hands-on and it was just a small group of people at her house, hanging out, figuring out what was the best thing to do for her brand and for our brand.

You just got back from London for the launch of the pop-up shop, what was the highlight of the night?

I'm fairly sure that Kate's favorite part was working the till-and being the best shopgirl I've ever seen. She had a lot of fun. She was definitely styling people in the dressing rooms-there were three or four people in there at all times with her. She loves stuff like that, so I think that was 100% her highlight.

What's Kate's favorite way to style the skinny scarf for fall?

Kate always loves to wear...sort of how Mick Jagger used to wear his shirts-like kind of unbuttoned and then she'll loosely throw on a contrast-print scarf to just make an outfit slightly more fun. So I think contrasting prints-like the white pajama shirt with the star scarf. I've seen people buy a few of the shirts that have the detachable scarves and mix and match them and then buy one of the solid pajama shirts and wear a scarf with it. Everything in the collection can sort of be styled together. I think that's the key.

There are models and then there's Kate Moss. What do you think it is about her that's earned her fashion icon status and a cult following?

I think that whatever "It" is, Kate has. She's one of the smartest, funniest, most charming people that I have ever met. I think that anyone who knows Kate can swear by that. No matter what she does, it's effortless. There are so many things that she was at the forefront of when she broke through. I mean, she'll tell the funniest stories, like how she had eight castings in a day and it was before she had broken through and her mom was like, "Oh god, we have to walk to all these," and she was like, "well fine, I'm just gonna do it. I know I can do it," and she did it. I think Corinne Day probably has a lot to do with that and The Face magazine has a lot to do with that. But Kate as a person is one of my favorite people in the world. She's so much fun. She's a great designer, she knows exactly what she wants. And even if you question it, she's always right. At the end of the day, you end up going back to it, because she's right.

What's next for Kate and Equipment?

We are putting the finishing touches on Spring, so we will have Spring coming out shortly. Who knows what the future will hold. I'm sure we'll come up with some other idea in the next few months, but I don't think it's the end of Kate and Equipment's relationship.
