Catherine and Matthew's love story began in January of 2012, when they danced the night away at a local bar in Toronto's Kensington Market area. The couple knew right away that they were meant for each other, so it was only an added bonus when they discovered that they had so much in common. "Our shared appreciation for playing pool, enjoying the great outdoors, fast cars and of course tearing up the dance floor was just icing on the cake," Catherine says.

When it came time to tie the knot, the couple agreed that paying homage to Matthew's Scottish ancestors was a must. The groom donned a kilt and sporran for the ceremony, and his traditional dress helped to inform the rest of the decor and colour scheme. "We decided on two different tartans from both Matthew's side and mine to coordinate with a palette of blue, red and white, which also served as a nod to the Union Jack and Canada's flag," Catherine explains.

The couple knew from the beginning that they wanted their wedding day to be unique, so they went to great lengths to ensure that every detail was personalized. The groom, a graphic designer, set to work creating a unique emblem for the wedding that incorporated Catherine's stylish side and his creative sensibility, all while serving as a nod to the regal vibe of the day. "I wanted the crest to have a royal touch. The crown says it all!" Matthew says. The crest was incorporated into the appliquéd tartan wedding invitations, which also helped to tie in the Scottish theme of the day.

After the ceremony (during which the bride gifted the groom with a giant sword), the couple travelled to the University Club of Toronto for their reception in a horse-drawn carriage. "There was a special moment during the ride when all we could hear was the rain and the sound of horse hooves. It was magical!" The bride says.

By the end of the day, Catherine and Matthew were ready to celebrate with a night full of the activity that had originally brought them together - dancing! "After a long day of fun and mingling, we couldn't wait to tear up the dance floor," Catherine says.
